[xj-s] What do you think of my jack adaptor?

I just got a new two ton aluminum jack and then remembered why I
used the standard jack before , because of the location pins !.

I got a 3’’ dia ally rod about 25mm thick and put it in my lathe.
This was a quick job and tools need a grind but does the job
perfect. The adaptor ring mounts over the standard jacking pin and
gives a larger surface to lift the car from a larger jack. I took a
few pics to see what you think . Has any other members made these ?

That looks great!

How much for a set of 4? Probably cost more to ship to the US, huh.On Oct 31, 2012, at 2:56 PM, 540itouring wrote:

Very nice. Made four rubber ones that are square with the hole a
push fit onto he pins so that they stay in place while rolling the
jack under them.–

I made some adaptors using short pieces of 2 X 4 wood. I
drilled a recess in the wood so it fits around the pin and
spreads the load over a fairly large area around the pin.

To minimize damage to the undersides of my cars, I always
use wood between the jacks or jack stands and the car. I
have various wood pieces in different sizes and thicknesses.
This allows spreading the loads over larger areas of the
car, especially on unibodies. Where possible, I use hard,
tough woods. I have found that wood from old skids works
very well.

maybe a little under-engineered ,

but I used a piece of 4x2 and an inch hole drilled into it on
the 4’’ side to just under the depth of the jacking stud

works perfectly , and is softer than the bodywork around it ,
so zero damage ,

and when worn out , I make another in about 90 seconds

We refer to that raw material as 2 x 4’s. Very prominent and useful.

I like your design. Easily recycled as well whrn it splits or gets
sloppy. Thst is if you used fir or pine, if oak or another
hardwood, it will be around as long as you need it.

I keep all my cuttings for stuff like that. Disposable shipping
pallets contain a nice source of wood. Some pretty good stuff and
the others kinda soft from quick grown trees.

off topic…2X4’s…4X2’s…reminds me of a joke…

Dumb guy, carpenter apprentice goes out in the truck with the team
for a job. They pull into Home Depot, and the foreman says,’‘Go in
and get some 2X4’s’’. He goes to the counter and asks for
4X2’s; '‘We’re building a house ‘eh’’

‘‘4X2’s’’! the salesman says, ‘‘Are you sure you don’t mean 2X4’s?’’

‘‘Ah, let me go check’’, says the apprentice. He comes back. '‘Ah
right you are sir, it’s 2X4’s I be need’n not 4X2,s, we’re build’n
a house ‘eh’’

‘‘Okay right’’ says the salesman. ‘‘now that we’ve got that sorted,
how long do you need them?’’

'‘Oh, a long time, we’re build’n a house ‘eh’’–

How are the jack adapters you made working out? From your pics I see an additional spacer of some sort that you made if I am looking at it correctly. If you wouldn’t mind sharing the dimensions I would appreciate it. I read that you started with a 3" diameter piece about 25 mm thick. What is the dimension of the step in the piece and the size of the hole? If you started with a thicker piece would you not need the additional spacer or does that spacer provide some flexibility in the tool’s use I am not aware of?

Nice looking jack adapter by the way and thanks for sharing.
