[xj-s] Wheres the power steering pump?

Hello Everyone- I have a 6.0 liter 95 XJS Convertible.
Whenever I turn the steering wheel, it sounds like a dive
bomber or a screeching cat is under the hood (sorry,
bonnet). I am trying to find the power steering pump (I
assume there is one), but dont know where it is. I want to
check the fluid before going on to other possibilities.
thank you.–

Flapper, most probably you’re low on fluid. Don’t know if it
changed location, but in my 91 convertible (pre-facelift), the
filler is below the left radiator hose. A place where it is better
to have pianist fingers to be able to remove the cap. Besides,
you’ll have to fabricate a funnel with a tiny hose attached to it
to be able not to spill ATF all over. Besides, you don’t mention
where you live, nor if your car is LHD or RHD. I ignore it, but
maybe the place switches sides (don’t think so).

In short, not much I can inform you for sure, but at least I’ve
shown good will! :-))) Welcome to the forum!!!–

Thank you for the help. The car is a LHD (I live in CT)what
do you use for fluid? I have read ATF fluid, and even
mineral oil. Thanks again.–

I use Castrol ATF, Dexron III. But any brand will be OK. Do you own
the car for a long time, or is it new to you? Because that thing
does not evaporate. There has to be a leak somewhere. Normally not
easy to solve. Anytime you hear it whining, refill immediately. It
is not good for the pump to run on a low level. Rgds, L.–

I got the car last summer (July), drove it till December,
then stored it until two weeks ago. I am a newbie with these
cars, though 20 years ago I did custom audio and security
systems for a Jaguar dealer, and I have lusted after one of
these since. Being a British vehicle, it has some quirks. I
cant stop getting hot air in the car, the windows dont go up
high enough (it is a convertible), and I made the mistake of
running it through a touchless car wash, and high pressure
water came in over the tops of the windows. I will get these
items sorted out eventually. thanks for everyones help.–

Mine did the same. Turned out to be a defective heater valve, that
didn’t close completely and that also leaked coolant. It is a
spherical chromed thingy with a thin vacuum hose attached to it, to
be found in the middle of the engine bay, in between the firewall
and the balance pipe between the two inlet manifolds. Well, at
least it’s like that in my 5.3 91 car. Sorry if it’s different in
your car.–

I’m telling from memory, but move from the relays FORWARD towards
the radiator, and well hidden BELOW a thick hose entering the
radiator you’ll find it… well, if it is in the same location as
in my car’s model.–

I suggest removing the soft rubber hose on the lefty intake
for slightly better access to the PS Pump. It’s way down
there about half way to the bottom of the block. If you are
getting leaks tighten all the low pressure hose clamps.–

Hi, not sure if you have received an answer yet, but the belt
driven pump is in front of the engine left side. I have had the
same noise problem and found the oil level was low.
I found that it was easier to get at the fillcap/dip stick if I
removed the air inlet hose going to the air filter. Then you need
two hands one to lift another hose up which is over the filler and
the other to unscrew the filler cap. Be carefull not to break the
small wire which goes to the small sensor in the tank on the side
of the engine compartment. If you have an owners handbook you will
see the pump location.I use a funnel and a piece of plastic tube to
add oil. I found it impossible to pour directly. If you over fill
you need to draw some out again using this tube.
Hope that helps.–

The filler cap for power steering is not in plain sight. It
is located under the big radiator hose on the left front
side of engine compartment. You must muscle your hands
around and under the large hose. Your going to need a
funnel with a long nose to reach and fill the power steering
system.–
