Zoot ('88 XJ-S) needs new shoes. All a rereasonably low, but
one rear has a blister on the tread making for an
unconfortable (and I imagine unreliable) ride.
Currently it has Yokohama Avid S/T 235/60R15 98T. As near as
I can figure, nobody in my area carries them. I could only
find them on a truck website to order.?? Are they truck
tires???
Anyway Pirelli’s are out for cost and back ordered anyway,
and I am looking at BF Goodrich and Cooper Cobra’s. Oddly
enough, the 245/60R15 Coopers are $9 LESS than the
235/60R15. Gotta love economy of scale!!
So the question is…What is the widest tire that will fit
under an 88? 245 will only add 3/16’’ to each side of the
tire. Doesn’t seem like much. Is it as simple as crank the
wheels over both ways and take a look? Or does the experience exist in this group to sat 255 up to 27.5’’ - No
problem (for example)
Thanks!–

I have 255/50 16 on the rear, but you can’t have fender trims.
the edge must be folded up as on the early cars.–

If you will go to kwecars.com,(UK) Chris Knowles has presented a
spread sheet of compatible wheel/tire sizes. Very useful and
helpful in making a decision on wheel, tire sizes. Best, JW–

I understand your fear… Based on what you’ve written this
may be too scary for you… But Do you realize how easy it
is to move the fenders around for clearance?
I’ve moved fenders out more than 3/4 of an inch without any
way to visibly detect the movement… sight down the sides
and it’s not noticeable. look at it from any angle and you
still can’t see it…
The technique is done with hydraulic power. Those little
bottle jacks? They work wonders. Spread the load out using
2x4’s and prevent localized loads by filling an old sox with
sand. Put the sox between the 2x4 and the inner fender…
Don’t be greedy, move the fender a little at a time. Some
fenders have Bondo under the paint and if you watch what
you’re doing you’ll note potential problems before a crack
in the paint actually appears…–

This is covered in the archives, but the short answer is at
bernie embden’s site.
I run 245-50/17 on the rear and had to roll the inside
edges. These are on xk8 wheels. So to really answer your
question, we have to talk about offset. Again, go to the
archives on this.
Size on front will have alot to do with rim diameter,
aspect ratio and offset. I run 225-45/17 on fronts, and
use spacers and longer studs to get clearance on rod ends
and to fit center caps.
On these cars the answer is, it depends, so approach with
care.–

TWR used 225/50/16 on front and 245/55/16 on back of the cars that
were dealer modified. The wheels on my car are Jaguar Sport 7 x 16.
When I got the car there were 235/60/16 tires on it and they rubbed
slightly on the front body kit

Made an error in my post:
I checked again, and the fronts I am running are 225/40-17’s,
running on 17’’ XK8 rims.
I chose this pair of sizes (245/50-17 and 225/40-17) to match the
tire OD used on the XJS-R, which, as dizmando noted in this thread,
uses two different tire sizes. Note the rubbing he mentioned
because the tire size had later been changed- this is the problem
you have to contend with on this car. Note too, that the XJS-R
features front and rear wheels with different offsets, so that they
can get the workable running fitment.
All of this means that you must carefully assess the change in
overall OD (affects fitment to be sure, but also affects speedo
cal), and you must also assess the rim offset needed, because this
will determine alot of the fenderwell clearances. On the fronts,
you must also be careful to chose wheel sizes such that the tie rod
ends clear, and that the front roll bar fixings are also cleared,
for the offset you have selected.

Ok, I guess I needed that first cup of coffee before reading the
tire size!
I was right the first time: the fronts use 225/45-17, as I
originally stated. Again, the size choices (245/50-17 rear, 225/45-
17 front) were made to obtain overall OD layout as on the XJRS.
Notably, the rear tire OD is as needed to not require a recal of
the speedo, whereas the front OD is somewhat smaller (leading to a
slightly nose-down stance, again, as on the XJRS).

I run 275-35-18 Nitto. on ENKEI wheels. in my albums.
had to roll the front lower fender edge just a little(at full
lock), and had to mod the inner rear of wheel well,(with a
heavy hammer, then spray with undercoat),YES me bad!!
spacers on rear. wide body mod.
but it works,NO rubbing. YA gotta look close to see it!
gives me bigger contact patch, all around.–

That’s an outstanding thread, thanks!
I run the XK8 ‘revolver’, too, and I have two sets of these. One
set has a very subtle but real fitment difference relative to the
other. Same spec rims, too. Go figure.
The other thing I would add is, the fitment to the convertible
models, especially in the rear, seems slightly different from the
coupe models, as near as I have been able to determine. Some fit
this XK8 wheel (coupes), and it’s OK; others fit this wheel to the
convertible, and get a different clearance result. (same tire spec
in both cases; but I suppose one could have differences in the same
size between two manufacturers…).
Great summary, and thanks for making people on the list aware of
this. The issue of offset hangs just about everybody when they
first approach this matter.–

You are very welcome. It took a while for me to write it. One
day I’ll add more to the thread in the way of which other
wheels will fit, other than the already mentioned 17 X 8 XJR
wheels and XKE revolvers.–
