[xj-s] Windshield wiper motor advice!

Just pulled the windshield wiper assembly from an 87 XJS and needed
help/suggestions.

I knew the thing would be seized and expected it but now I’m not
sure what to do with it now that I have it completely disassembled.

The gear portion of the motor was to my surprise still greased well
and clean on the inside. The electrical motor on the other hand…
I knew right away as I was pulling the long bolts from the
electrical motor from the amount of rust on the bolts that it would
be bad inside.

I did (with a little effort) manage to get it to move and was able
to free the coil portion from the magnets but my question is…
NOW WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?
The coils are pretty rusted and the inside of the motor is fairly
rusted also. The inside portion with the magnets could probably be
brushed clean and would be fine.

So question remains… what would be the best solution to getting
it working again? Should I just replace the whole motor (which I’m
trying to avoid because they can be expensive) or should I try to
have the electrical coil and housing cleaned/replaced?

Thanks guys! I’ll post pictures if needed.–

With a little patience, you can clean up the magnets. It takes
time because the rust is magnetic and wants to stick.

As for the armature (the coils) you can lightly sand the
laminations and if you don’t destroy the enameled insulation on the
wires, you sould be OK.

Check to make sure the magnets are tight. Often, when moisture
gets inside the motor the magnets rust and brake loose from the
housing. Before doing any work, mark the orientation of the
magnets. Then, if they are loose, you can reglue them. I use JB
Weld. Just make sure that not only is the orientation corrects,
but that the magnets are as close to the housing as possible,
otherwise the armature may bind.

WHen it is apart, you better check the brushes. Carbon abosrbs
moisture and expands. This not only softens them but can cause
them to bind. You should be able to get new brushes at a hardware
store.–

I don’t think that I’m positive on what the brushes look like.
The magnets are still attached to the housing and overall
everything looked pretty good other than the thing being seized
together before I pulled it apart.

I sprayed some electrical motor cleaner on the coiled section and
it seemed to clean it up really good. When placed back into the
housing with the magnets it turns much easier now.–

The brushes are rectangular pieces of carbon. They are in brass
holders with some sort of spring mechanism to supply pressure so
they have good contact with the commutator (the brass pieces at one
end of the armature) If they are long enough and slide smoothly in
the holder you are in good shape.

The moisture issue brings up something I forgot. On the
commutator, make sure that the carbon from the brushes has not
transfered to the slots on the commutator. You can polish the
commutotor with very fine sand paper (do not use emery) and with a
knife, scrape out the spaced between the brass pieces.

OTOH, if the motor is smooth when assembled, with no scraping, you
probably are ok.–
