[xj-s] Wire wheels -Reply

I need to jump in and agree. My former '90 convertible had Jaguar
Growler Dayton wire wheels and they were never a problem and easily
cleaned with a bristle broom soaked in car wash soap.

Best regards,

Bill

I too have heard all the horror stories about wires on the heavy XJ-S car.
I
do not know if mine were really taken care of by the PO or if these are
made
of a lucky metal that does not give you all the headaches you expect.
Our
1987 has had wires all it’s
life and aside from always being in need of a good cleaning there have
been
no problems in 92K miles. We think the wires really set the car even
further
apart from the crowd. John and Sue in West Texas.

I just looked at an otherwise very nice XJ-S '89, clearly well looked after
with only 50K miles, BUT there was a very pronounced wobble above about 50mph.

This car had wire wheels, and the owner told me that they had just been
“reconditioned”, tuned up, etc. I would have thought that part of that tuning
would have included a wheel balance job, but obviously there is still a
serious imbalance.

This is the only car I have every driven with wires, but it was a graphic
example of what can go wrong.
