[xj-s] Wood colouring / spec

Hi Guys,

Quick question about the wood in my 89 UK XJS.

My car has walnut facias which are cracked so i’ve been looking into
replacing them. When i first got the car i was suprised they were
walnut becuase i thought XJ-Ss used Elm not Walnut. I’m just wondering
if someone has replaced the orignal wood with new panels and thats why
they are Walnut now. My car is a sort of darkish red color - almost
maroon, I think it’s call Regency red - just incase they do it to
match colours.

While I’m here I was just wondering if there any spec levels applied
to the XJS, I’ve also got a xj and they’ve got several spec level
xj12->sov->DD6->VDP so i was just wondering if a similar thing exists
for the XJ-Ss. Just really wondering if there are options I dont have.

Thanks in advanced

My '83 had Elm Burl, but I gather that most XJ-S’s had Walnut. I
dunno if it’s by year, by color scheme, or whether one or the other
was an option of some sort.

My '83 had elm, my '95 has walnut. Could be that wood was changed
along with other changes that were made to the XJS–

Hi Simon,

The Elm was used on all V12 and 3.6 XJS’s until roughly the
mid 80’s…Thereafter the elm was only used on the the 3.6
cars and the V12’s were finished in the Burred Walnut only.

Hope that helps.

Burled Elm became more common in the late 80s and 90s V12 cars.

My 1991 XJ-S V12 came with Burled Elm as did many others I see at
car shows.

Personally, I like the Elm in cars with lighter colored paint, and
Walnut in cars with darker paint.–

My XJS 5.3 Coupe was manufactured October 1985 and has Elm Burr.
Body is White with Gold stipes, interior trim is Biscuit.
I don’t knmow if was an option at the time. I think they just
changed to Walnut Burr in the 1986 models. That is also when they
went to the veneered Ski-Slope, from the black one in the earlier
XJS HEs.–
