[xj-s] XJ-SC values

On my way home I saw a Cabriolet peeking out from a yard unused.
No idea of condition, but it got me wondering…
If XJ-SC’s are of limited number, what would be the basic value of
the car if it had no major structural problems.

Is it worth investigating or just a trap for throwing money at?

Here is a fine example of an XJ-SC:

The issues intrinsic to SC iteration mostly have to do with
the fit of the Targa pieces. I would pay EXTREMELY close
attention to the fit of these pieces and would run any
prospective candidate for purchase through a high-pressure
car wash in order to inspect for leaks. Also the rear hood
is prone to disintegration. A standard, thorough inspection
for body rust is always indicated for any XJ-S.

To the enthusiast, ANY XJ-S is worth inspecting, even if one
has no interest after that point… sort of like Tiger
Woods’ mistresses (LOL). The ‘‘basic value’’ of an XJ-SC is
probably between $2000 and $25,000, depending upon mileage
and condition.

As you have no doubt learned here in the Forum, VALUE is a
function of both mileage and condition. There were THOUSANDS
of SCs produced, so they are not considered exceptionally
rare per se. Sean Straw’s 1988 is a particularly nice
example of SC, IMO. See picture section of this site.–

Hello !

The Targa soft top is rather easy to maintain in good condition
(see our photo album), but you should be carefull when greasing the
soft top mechanisms : in hot climate, an ordinary grease will lead
to grease stains on the head liner around the handles.
Don’t forget to put some special silicone on the rubber gaskets too.
In good condition, it’s a very nice car.
Also, just remember it’s not a sports car, weighting about 1.800 kg.
I’ll also be carefull with wire wheels, for the same reason !

Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do if you buy it !

Cheers–

Well I stopped on the way home anyway just cause I was curious.
Dead end anyway, the car is not available.
Owner left car there to have the guy do some work on it.
But the car has been there a long time with no change.
Sad but familiar end to many cars.–
