[xj-s] XJS V12 top speed

i Guys,
I’m just in the middle of having a tongue in cheek “My Dad’s bigger than
your Dad, nyah, nyah” argument with a guy who owns a Porsche 928 (It’s
the GT porsche - same size as the XJS for anyone who doesn’t know 'em),
and I was wondering if anyone can help me out with what the top speed is
of the V12 XJS (the 6.0 litre if the number’s bigger ).

There are different setup’s for a 928, so it depends. One number which comes
to my mind is 258 km/h for a 6.0 litre XJ-S I think with the latest 4 speed
Gm gearbox. Last time I drove my XJ-S in Germany I can’t remember that anything
passed on the Autobahn  [and although I’m living in France I’m german]
Better not ask about my average fuel consumption on this trip …

I think I have some official Porsche numbers at home, I’ll look them up as well.>

Please reply direct as I’m not on this list.

Thanks

John

No help on the relative top speeds, but I can point you to one thing.
About ten years ago Por**he ran a series of “direct from our engineers”
techno-babble ads on the 928. They spent two pages “explaining” why
their designed in high polar moment was a “good thing”. Engine by one
bumper, transmission by the other. Gee, every sports car, exotic car,
and race car builder in the last thirty years much be a bunch of utter
fools for trying to put the major masses as close to the center as
possible. On 12 Feb, John Littler wrote:

Amen! Us engineers can only provide one possible explanation for
Porsche’s claimed objective: The 911, their big seller for decades
up to that time, had all the weight in the tail and drove like an
arrow going backwards – skittish, requiring constant attention to go
straight. Lots of Porsche drivers LIKE that, and it certainly hasn’t
hurt their performance at the track, but perhaps the designers felt
that there were people out there who had test driven a 911 and didn’t
like it and they wanted to convince those people that the 928 was
different.

One thing’s for sure: weight at outer ends is NOT good for
performance. What all has the 928 ever done at the races? I dunno,
don’t follow them.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I remember cruising with an XJ 12 (pre
catalyst) with the speedometer showing 250 km/h when I was blasted away
by an 928. Although the XJ-S is a little bit faster, I doubt that it it
enough to beat the porsche. I also lost against an 911, which had way
better road holding on a curvy part of the autobahn.

Thanks very much for your comments guys, much appreciated, the info
enabled me to hot up an amusing interlude (he still thinks the XJ-S is
fat and slow, but I didn’t really expect to change his mind)

If you can get your hands on a Lister modified XJ-S and persuade your
friend it's just a standard car with a nice body kit (don't mention
the 7 litre engine) then you would be able to do 0-60 in just over 4
 secs and around 200mph.

I saw a couple advertised recently for around £30,000 ukp. I actually
sat in one of them, it is very heavily modified inside and out.
