[xj] S1 Gas Tank

The gas smell in my trunk is gradually getting worse. The pumps and
connections have all been replaced and are OK. I changed the gaskets at
the top of the filler spout. There is a lot of rust in the tanks that I
keep draining out, and I presume there are small holes giving rise to
the smell. I hear you can slosh some kind of expoxy solution in these
old tanks. Has anyone had experience with this?

There is a chemical solution that cleans the tank and will coat it to
prevent further erosion. Any tank manufacturer can provide it. I did mine
for 40$USD/tank and it works beautiful

Victor:

I did the sloshing and it does work, assuming there is something to slosh
onto. Mine lasted 10 years.

First remove the tank and get a look at the condition. Be careful about
the fumes which are extremely flammable. Even after rinsing with water,
there is still enough vapor to cause an explosion. I think a tank shop can
steam them out for you.

Once that’s done, you must remove as much rust as possible from the inside.
This can be done by violently shaking the tank with some gravel inside.
Restomotive Laboratories, the makers of POR 15, make a kit with everything
you need for successful sloshing. They have a web site.

If you use their product, be certain to cover the threads on the big brass
plug on the bottom and the tube for the outflow as the coating will cover
and plug them.

I believe there is more about this in the archives.

It’s worth checking the fuel pipes running just above the rear lower apron
from each tank. It’s a muck trap, and one of mine had rusted so badly that
a tap from a spanner caused a serious petrol leak. I replace it with a
length of 1/2" copper water pipe.
