[xj] S1 windshield seals

Several years ago I had a complete repaint on my 1970 XJ, including
front and rear windshield removal. Used that opportunity to replace
gaskets. I have a leak in corner of front windshield that window
guy says is faulty gasket. He can pass a thin piece of wire
completely through the seal, it does not fir correctly. I remember
I had some trouble finding a gasket in first place, it was
aftermarket. Does anyone know of a source of high quality gaskets
that would fit?? Jim McGrath–

hi,
I would check with SNG Barrat USA store.

their prices are low and their parts quality is excellent.

Hi Zurdo
You may have the same problem I have had recently with my
early 1970 S1. Some time in 1970 or thereabouts they changed
the screen rubber and chrome detail from a wide chrome which
only engages the rubber on its inner edge to a narrower
chrome which seats into the rubber on both edges. If this
is the case, you will probably find these early seals are
made of unobtainium! If you do find a source (and the ones
I got were labelled ‘‘S1 XJ6 (early)’’, I think from SNG, but
werent) let me know!
If the seals are still in good condition, I would try
resealing with lots of windscreen sealer to fix it. A trick
I was shown by a windscreen installer on my e type is to put
a peice of ~ 1/4-3/8 inch polypropylene rope between the
edge of the glass and the seal to ‘‘bulk it out’’ so it better
fits into the corner of the body and seals better onto the
body, if this is your problem. This could also work for the
XJ. Last resort would be the later seals, but you would then
need the narrow chromes, and would probably want to do the
back as well so it doesnt look odd.

Gentlemen:

Not to point too fine a point on it, but according to the technical
bulletin, the revised window gasket was used on cars from chassis
number 1L52958
about May 1970.
