[xj] Self-cancelling turn indicators on Series 1?

Hi Everyone,

This may be a silly question but are the turn signal
indicators on a 1973 Series 1 self-cancelling? Mine has to be
manually shut off after a turn. Everything else about the
indicator/flash lever works normally. I coulda sworn that all
BL cars self-cancelled by 73.

Thanks!

Yes, they are self-canceling.

If they do so only in one direction, it means that the
steering shaft is rotated relative to the rack. This is
possible even if the wheel is correctly oriented. With the
rack centered, the canceling pawl should be centered
(splines in upper steering column). Then, the wheel should
be attached so that it is centered as well.

If canceling fails in both directions, there must be
something fouled up in the canceling mechanism itself. If
you remove the steering wheel, you can have a look. I
suppose that a gross misadjustment of the upper steering
column splines might render the canceling inoperative in
both directions.–

Yes, they are self-canceling. On my series 1, I sometimes have
to fiddle with it a bit to get it to push down, though.–

Thanks! it doesn’t cancel in either direction so that’s
something I’ll have to take a look at. It does seem like the
lever is in an awkward position as well - sort of too close to
the instrument panel… Another thing to pull apart.
