[xj] SIII VdP - Found a weird one?

Gang,
I looked at a 1985 (9/84) SIII Vanden Plas today that I may end up
buying. It’s a US with 59k miles. It seems pretty clear that it
is truly a Vanden Plas – trunk badge, extended console with
ashtray and lighter for the rear, contoured seat bolsters, yadda
yadda. The exterior is Antelope. The problem is, the interior is
chocolate brown. I mean, dark, coffee brown. I did not know this
was possible and thought in '85 you could only get Doeskin. It is
possible that the seats have been reupholstered, but the door
panels and all are chocolate brown. Opinions?

I’ve seen a VDP that was silver birch exterior, with that
weird chocolate brown inside. Unfortunatly it was a parts car
at best, it was very interesting to look at.

Do you have any photos?

James,

Maybe the prior owner re-dyed the seats and door panels to suit

their taste?

I obtained some NOS front seat bottoms for my 1984 XJ6 VdP in

Buckskin and Barley and stripped the original dye and re-dyed them
Doeskin. You would never be able to tell the difference.

Gee, that interior would look great in my Grosvenor Brown XJ?

It was pretty dark when I saw the car last night, and I am going to
go back over there probably tomorrow and inspect closer. The seats
have been reupholstered; at least the seating areas have. Whoever
did the upholstery did the correct pleats like Jaguar did them,
though. It is of course then possible that the seat color was
changed, although the upholstery on the back of the seats and the
pockets looks original. However, the door panels and whatnot match
the seats, and don’t appear to be dyed. I have dyed a few things
in the past and this doesn’t look like dye. I am going to inspect
the door panels closer and see if I can get a look at any folds-
over to the back side and if there’s a different color back there.

If there’s evidence of doeskin somewhere, and I can determine with
reasonable accuracy that it was originally doeskin, then I will
probably re-dye the entire interior. Maybe I can even tape off the
piping so it will stay dark brown… haha. I like the doeskin
better. However, as a purist, if all I can find is chocolate
pudding, it will stay chocolate pudding.

Another interesting thing, the carpets are black. I am pretty sure
it is replacement. I wonder, if the buckskin interior is original,
what color carpets it would have had?

Oh, and this interior would look GREAT with the Grosvenor Brown.
What color is your upholstery… want to trade? LOL

James:
The original carpet colour for the Buckskin interior was the same as for the
Doeskin, that is “Rattan”, code XF (and the fleece overmats are also the
same code). Obviously, the carpets have been replaced in this car.
