[xj] Smoke : Update

Update on the smoking engine to date :

Replaced air filter and reset mixture - lessened grey/black smoke
Reduced the mixture even more - no grey/black smoke now even on
kickdown
Car now produces blue smoke only - as the listers suggested it should
Removed the crankcase ventilation thimble filter - reduced smoke by
50%
Cleaned entire breather system - reduced smoke slightly
Added 5 litres of ‘trade’ oil supplied by my mechanic , very thick -
reduced smoke slightly more

Now my question is this , how can it be smoking this much and using
litres of oil and yet produce NO oil fouling on the plugs?
The plugs look perfect, I mean PERFECT, just like looking at that
picture in Haynes of a plug that is burning correctly. Light tan in
colour, very slight build up of carbon deposits - perfect.

It just defies my comprehension, if anyone of you guys can offer any
suggestion, please help. I know this problem has dragged on a bit now
but it is driving me crazy.

Many thankx for your usual patience and help.

John, sounds like you’re making progress. A small amount of oil can be
burned, especially in a big engine, without fouling plugs, because turning the
engine off, usually at low rpm, provides little opportunity for oil to be
sucked up past rings, etc. before the machinery stops. How much oil
consumption do you have now? It only takes a little to be visible.
