[xj] Source for Cork submat in boot floor?

Any ideas as to a source for this 35X39 sheet of thin cork?
(A petrol spill some years ago has left it with an odor I simply can’t remove
:frowning: )

Lowes and Home Depot don’t have it.

TIA

What mat are you seaking of? for what model? There is certainly no cork mat
in the Series III car.

Cork is sometimes used as a flooring material…try some of the flooring
shops or departments.
Also try NAPA…

I didn’t know we had cork in our cars, although I haven’t looked too hard
for it. …is yours a series 1?

My SIII has a thin mat that sits under the boot carpet. Two of the corners
have a ‘bite’ out of them that matches the bite in the corner of the boot
carpet. I’m not sure that it’s made of cork though. I rather thought it
was a kind of rubberised granule (rather like cork, actually!!). Not listed
in the parts book, but clearly original equipment on my car.

Greetings Peter,

Ref: Boot Mat
Mine only has a piece of carpet with the cut out ears and no under mat,
is that original equipment?
I have often wondered is something was missing from the boot centre carpet
area of my car, as the centre piece is lower than the side carpet pieces.

Sorry guys! I should have been more informative… (Thanks for the
flood of responses reminding me of my negligence   Here’s the scoop:

First, the thin “cork” mat is semi-glued to the carpet in the floor in my
boot in my 85 xj6 Series III. I am positive it is OEM. It has cut aways on
the leading edge corners - just like the carpet so one can get his/her
fingers under it for easy removal.

I say “cork”. Not so sure about that now :-P. Looks like cork, breaks like
cork, and it has a bit of whitish mildew on the underneath side. It’s very
old, dark and crumbly now. So…what is it then??

Thanks again!

Now I know what you are talking about…You might try the carpet stores. This stuff seems to be similar to underlayment used in residential carpeting. Good luck.

List-

Not sure what this stuff is either but it is all over the place in the
cars. Been trying to find a piece that lives in the passenger side
footwell (BAC 1912). The guess is it is a pressure molded rubber that as
it drys ( outgasses ? ) and ages becomes brittle and crumbles much like
cork.

I replaced the piece in the boot with a flooring underlayment used for
certain tile applications. It is approximatly twice the thickness but a
very similar material to the original.

Doug:
The mat that Peter describes as black, with notches cut out at the rear
corners, is the same size as the carpet, and in fact is the underlay or
backing of the carpet piece. It is normally attached to the carpet, so I
wonder if this is an extra piece in Peter’s car, or if his underlay has
separated from the top carpet piece. In any case, the depression over the
wheel well cover that you describe is “normal”, and it is not filled by any
extra mat to level it, although we all wish Jaguar had thought of this.
