[xj] Starter Questions

Happy New Year!
Just trying to finish up my SII engine rebuild/Carb Swap/Tranny conversion -
left over bits of the project from last year. I did the TH700 conversion so
am using the Chevy starter necessary for that portion of the project. Out of
the box rebuilt starter from a very reputable parts house. The starter will
only engage the ring gear and crank the engine about 1 out of 20 tries. The
rest of the times it sounds as if the bendix “bounces off” the ring gear (metalic
clang) and then the starter free spins. All the starters I have ever had on
my vehicles have been flange mounted rather than the GM vertical bolt mount as
is on this one. I have added the shim which is included with the starter to
see if it helped but no joy. Is there something I have missed in setup or
should I just return this starer and try another? Rest of the project is coming
out good - when I get the engine to crank it starts (even though I haven’t got
a choke cable setup yet for the HD8s), idles and the tranny puts out the
required motion to the rear wheels. Can’t wait for “paws down” so I can go
driving it again.

Really want to get this project on the road so I can start on the SI for
myself.

Thanks for your opinions and I"ll post the solution.

I would try adding a couple more shims. But that’s just me

Yes, I second that idea. Extra shims. I did one for my son’s
pontiac, the starter came with a piece of wire to gage the
clearance between the gears.–

Scott:
I had the exact problem with a replacement starter for my Buick
Skylark that I purchased from a ‘‘reputable parts supplier’’. After
hours of fiddling with shims with no success, I decided to take the
starter apart and compare it with the original. It turned out that
the engaging lever that moves the starter’s pinion into the ring
gear in response to movement of the solenoid had been installed
backwards. Because the lever has a slight curve to it, when
installed backwards, it didn’t throw the pinion far enough into the
ring gear. It was a simple job to turn it around the right way and
I haven’t had any trouble since.

Hi Scott,
This is interesting. Perhaps more shims is the solution. I just
put a 700 on my ser3 and used a rebuilt starter from one of the big
chain parts places. It engages just fine without any shims. It’s
for an 85 Camaro, I think. It seems like everything is the same on
our two installations. I wonder why the difference with the
starters?–

Scott: I just wanted to emphasize that the problem I had was
exactly the same as what you are having. The starter would catch
about one in 10 times, but the other times it would go ‘‘ding’’ and
then ‘‘whiz’’ as the pinion just spun freely. Dave–
