[xj] steering rack problems

Hi all I have just lowered my steering rack to sort out a large
leak,i suspect the high pressure hose.Am I right in saying the high
pressure hose comes from the pump direct to the rack and the low
pressure hose returns to the pump via the oil cooler? This is on a
series3 DD6.Also there is a large washer between the steering
universal joint and the rack pinion which is loose and appears to
do nothing what is its purpose? Can anyone help? dennis–

Further to my last post the high pressure pipe seems ok so I have
removed rack and will get a seal kit to cure the problem I hope Has
anyone fitted new seals to a rack, was it successful? and any
problems doing it. Is it the pinion seal thats most suspect?
any help will be appreciated Dennis–

I once put new seals in the power rack in one of my E-types.
It is a PITA to take the thing apart and put change them. Be
very meticulous when it comes to the tower; with its valves.
I don’t know if you have a place to get a rebuilt unit, but
I opted for a professionally rebuilt unit for my XJ. It is
too much hassle to r+r the unit, when I am not sure I could
tell if the bushings were worn. Changing the seals is only
one part of the equation. You will also need to know if the
inner rack bushings are worn. As for the rack mount
bushings, I went with black urethane. They are firmer than
the ‘soft’ urethane. You don’t really pick up any
significant road vibration, and the rack has less lateral
movement when turning side to side.–

Hi Dennis, I too have tried to change seals myself and not only was
it a pain but also a waste of time as the system leaked again
immediately afterwards.

My funds are always low, so one option I discovered that you might
like to consider is to take the rack and seals to a local steering
repair centre and ask them to fit them for you.

I did that and they sorted my problem, in a fraction of the time it
took me to make it worse, and charged me less than a quarter of the
cost of buying and shipping a refurbished unit.

Cheers
Franksy–
