[xj] The Gardiner Mod

they decided not to incorporate a VENT
position. We Jag-lovers have fixed that with the “Gardiner” modification.

I know I’ve read about that mod but just can’t remember where. Could you
point me in the right direction?

FWIW, I prefer this variation:

Your '87 12-cylinder car will likely have the later Delaniare Mk III system.
Neither of the above will apply…although I think someone out there has
figured out an alternate procedure (?)

Yes, Doug, I can tell anyone the procedure for doing the Gardiner
modification to the Delanaire Mark III (and yes, the 1987 V12 cars have this
system). The job is essentially the same as described in the archives,
except that the solenoid is different and located in a slightly different
location, and the colour of the wire connector to be removed is GREEN.
The modification works as it does for the Mark II system except that the
centre dash air vent does not open.

I found this article this morning, and dutifully performed the Gardner and Napoli
procedures on my '87. Then came in the house and found this in my mailbox.

FWIW, I prefer this variation:

O well, I guess I’ll see how I like it this way.

By the way, I used the window lockout switch for Gardner; for Napoli I installed
a small rocker switch in the left ashtray. No holes were drilled in doing the
modification; I used cyanoacrylate adhesive to attach the plastic switch bracket
to the pull-out part of the ashtray. Seems to work fine.

Anyway, thanks to all for the help.
