[xj] The Odyssey (Greek: Ὀδύσσεια, Odsseia)

Well, I finally did it!!! After searching for nearly two
years for an acceptable Series I XJ6 saloon I finally did
the deed and purchased ‘‘Old Red’’ a 1973 year model described
pretty well by these photos in my PhotoBucket album:

On December 1st my wife and I flew to Orlando, FL. On the
2nd we inspected the car and made the purchase. We spent the
rest of the day on personal pleasure and bright and early
the next morning embarked on a 2732 mile odyssey/journey
home. Right now we are resting up before we have dinner at
our first stop in Milton, FL some 458 miles later according
to the Garmin SatNav. Old Red has run flawlessly so far and
other that displaying a few mysteries/anomalies everything
has function properly. The basic plan id to drive her all
the way home unless there are problems. In that case we call
AAA to get us to the nearest U-haul rental center where we
rent a pick up and trailer to take her the rest of the way.
The itinerary has us making a stop every 450-475 miles and
to be home the 8th of December. I plan on making a short
post every day to brag about ‘‘Old Red’’ or reveal any
problems, nothing major I hope.

Series I drivers, first question!!! I feel a lot of heat
from the tranny tunnel/floorboard area right where my right
foot is on the ‘‘go’’ pedal. I know the down pipe on the
exhaust is right in front of that but it is a lot hotter
than my Series III. I have never driven my Series III for
450 miles in one day so I am asking is that normal for the
Series I or what???

Also, is there an indicator light someplace that lights up
when you have high beams on???

More later, time for dinner. By the way, what an incredible
road car, especially for a 38 year old girl!!!–

What a beautiful car, Gordon! I wish I was that well maintained! I hope
you’ll have lots of enjoyable rambles with her.

I notice the car has a boot plinth and rear head rests. Were those available
in later Series 1s or would they be modifications?
