[xj] Too loud?gutted cat

I have been becoming more and more aware of a guttaral and louder purr of
the engine on my XJ6 with the CD player at lower volumes and windows
up.Since I have a front caytalitic converter that was gutted by the PO I
wonder if replacing the cat with straight tubing or the correct cat (cars
manufactured before 1996 are no longer required in my state to undergo
emmission testing) would make it quiteter.

In reply to a message from Frank Wood sent Sat 3 Mar 2007:

Are you sure it’s the CAT that causing the gutteral sound? While
it’s possible, there are areas around the manifold that can leak
and cause this sound too.

I have an aftermarket CAT and it does, at certain RPM’s, have a
growly sound…but it’s not consistent across the RPM range.

The OEM CAT is the quietest solution, but they are $800.00 now.–
