Type F is the proper fluid. It has a greater viscosity than the Dexron
fluids. Some here have used the Dexron, but it contains friction
modifiers that make it slipperier. I think that would cause greater
clutch wear than Type F.

Which is better? I plan on changing the fluids tomorrow morning.
The “most correct” ATF for your car would be Type F or Type FA. Many use
Dexron and are happy. Its a bit “more slippery” than F or FA.
Dexron VI is the latest iteration, is very high grade, synthetic, and
expensive. Dexron III is simply an older spec, non-synthetic, and less
expensive.

I need some help. I have ask some dealers and parts stores
and I get different answers on what is recommended for a
1985 XJ6. I have bought two types that were recommended but
now that I am going to change the filter I am worried that I
may have the wrong type.
The types I have are Valvoline Dextron-VI and Chevron Dexron
III Type H.

Neither.
You need Type F. Valvoline still makes it (type FA), as does
Castrol.
Even PepBoys has their own branded Type F. The spec is M2C33-F. But
that’s hard to find on the bottle anymore. sheesh.–

Thanks Craig. It was hard to find here where I am at. But I
have it coming and will have to put off changing fluid and
filter till another day.
Unless fluid is put into a completely dry box, Jeff; during a normal
change there is considerable residual fluid mixing with the new.
However, as far as I know the ‘family’ of fluids used are perfectly
compatible, and the difference between them is not great. I would still
stay with whatever was in the box - but you’ll be OK anyway…
I am having difficulty finding documentation on type of trans fluid
to use in my 84 XJ6. Manual says ‘‘G’’ type buy Walmart doesn’t have
any with that designation. Is it Ford or GM type fluid?

Dumb question number… Actually I have lost count. I have what I presume
to be a Borg Warner 65 box in my Jaguar. The owner’s manual lists Shell
Donax T7 fluid as suitable for this box. I have access to a supply of
Donax TF for free. Is it interchangeable in this box, before I use it and
destroy the box?
