[xj] transmission question

“Tom Golodik” tgolodik@CYBERNEX.NET

Okay, folks. I’m stumped. Reassembled the engine today, including driven
plate and torque converter and put the trans back on. Couldn’t turn the
engine over. Took the trans back off. (See, Vilis, happens to all of us!)
In examining the trans, it appears that of the two shafts that engage the
torque converter only one, the inner driven shaft, will spin. The outer
shaft for the front pump seems seized and doesn’t move a bit. I’m assuming
it should move freely. I’ve moved the shifter lever back and forth into
various positions to ensure the parking pawl isn’t engaged, but no change.
I haven’t opened the case or done anything to the trans except to pull it
off one block and bolt it to another. What am I doing wrong, or, what’s
gone wrong, if it ain’t me? All suggestions welcome as usual.

Regards,
Tom Golodik===================================================

Tom, you are probably looking at the stator support shaft which SHOULD be
stationary.

I’m new here! I’ve got an exchange question; Would an '89 XJS
tranny (gm) fit my 86 series III?

Unless the 86 Series III is a V12 car, then it would fit.

Too true ! I obviously assumed an XJ6. And we all know what happens when
we assume, right ?

In reply to a message from Doug Dwyer sent Sun 7 Jun 2009:

Thanks,

It is an '86 XJ6. : <

I’ve been offered a dismantled '89 V12 driveline for a
ridiculously low price and had been nhoping the tranny was an
exchange as mine is a bit dodgy, but I may grab it anyway for
barter value.

thanks again,

scott
