I would definitely recommend the 7 inch headlights. 5 foot lights really
would spoil the looks of an Jaguar…

Thanks much for this post. I must admit I am appalled at the price of the
conversion kits. I have a friend in the UK at this point who owes me a
favor. Does anyone have exact P/n for TR or MG components which are part of
the conversion.

You’re Welcome Douglas!

The expensive stuff, is the final trim ring.
Everything else can be had locally,
for under $50.00 or so.
I will pass the stock # of the trim ring on
to you when I get home from work.

“Stephen Gibson” <@Stephen_Gibson1>

Hi Ted

This is the post I recently sent out to listers who had shown interest
in obtaining the 7" conversion kits, if it is of any use to you.

At a quick reckoning, I would be able to supply the 7" trim
rings (2) together with the clips (4) to make the conversion finish for
72.95 ($109).

The full kit that would include everything including LHD Hella H4
with pilot light lamp units looks like working out at 176.25 ($264)
for the two headlight assemblies.

These prices are plus shipping for which I could only hazard a guess
at this moment in time.

Let me know what you think and if you wish to proceed.

Regards

        Steve-----------------------------------------------------------------

@Peddlarbob

There is a point to remember when obtaining seal beam units from Europe. When
the lights are dimmed (Low beam) they aim to the centre of the road not to
the curb side. In other words they are the opposite to North Americans
versions. Cause they drive on the wrong side of the road (and this comes
from a displaced Englishman).

Jebb. I stand corrected as always. I must apologise for my terminology,
my American is not very good yet, but I am getting there. What do you call a
head light unit that is sealed gives light when energised and plugs into a
wiring harness on a car? Because what ever they are called I have four of
them on each of my Jags and if you buy them from “over the pond” they dim to
the wrong side. Bob.===================================================

Bob: the “sealed beam” units are the ones in which the filament is not
replaceable; you must replace the entire unit. Typically with the Jaguar
lamps you replace only the bulb; the glass lens unit remains.

Bob,
In the USA, depending on whom you speak to,
we call them headlamps, headlights, sealed beams,
eyes, flame throwers, low beams, high beams etc.

There are a few different configurations tho…
one is a regular incandescent sealed bulb, with in internal reflector
called a “Sealed Beam” … hardly used anymore

another is a incandescent sealed bulb with in internal reflector,
with a gas of differing kinds, called a “Halogen” sealed beam, rather expensive.

there is another, a two piece, where the bulb, is removable from
the lamp reflector housing.(expensive)
The bulb, is also “Halogen”, and replaced rather inexpensively.

Bulbs will dim to the wrong side, only if you buy them from England.
All the other countries in Europe, drive on the right, just as we do.

Gregory. Both my cars have sealed beam units according to your definition.
Are you saying that these are non standard for my cars. Particularly with the
one the I am restoring should I not then replace the existing ones I have
with the correct type which is?

“Dr Gregory Andrachuk” mgb@uvvm.uvic.ca

Bob: until 1986, Canadian cars came with sealed beam units. After that the
Series 3 cars had the H4 flat llens 7 inch outer lamps (as elsewhere in the
world) and inner H1 convex lamps. What you do with your restoration depends
on this: do you want you car to continue with the inadequate sealed beam
lamps that US/Canadian regulations required in the early 80’s or do you want
the lamps that give good lighting, look “proper”, and were the size and type
Jaguar specified for other markets? That makes it pretty clear to me, which
is why my cars all have the second configuration. Of course, my V12 (88 S3,
Canadian spec. came that way in an case). The reason that Canadian Jags
conformed to the US requirements in the early years (69 to 85-6 for the XJ
cars) is that the Jaguar market in Canada was fairly small at that time. It
was cheaper to produce the cars as “federal” bodies to US spec. After this
time, even US lighting standards became more enlightened (!) and by 86 lots
more Jags were being sold in Canada. The US Jags continued with the
inadequate lamps until the end of S3 production in spring of 87. Bosch
makes flat lens lamps in both sizes with H4 bulbs.

Bob

I assume that you were referring to my posting for 7" headlamp kits coming
from the UK. If so, please note that I specifically mention LHD.

“The full kit that would include everything including LHD Hella H4
with pilot light lamp units looks like working out at 176.25 ($264)
for the two headlight assemblies.”

By the way, being a displaced Englishman you must have forgotten that we
refer to the change from High Beam to “Dipped Beam”. Well in the civilised
World we do - you know - where they drive on the Right side of the road, by
which of course I mean - on the LEFT. :>)
