[xj] Vacuum in my gas tank. What's going on?

Hi folks,

This question has to do with my Canadian spec. 92 Ser. III VDP V12.

When I went to fill the fuel tanks this morning I got quite a surprise. Upon
opening the first fuel tank cap (the left) I couldn’t help but notice a
clear “sucking” sound from the fuel filler hose. It was like there was a
considerable vacuum in that tank and it wasn’t relieved until after I popped
the fuel tank cap. The right tank, filled a few minutes later, was OK. Both
tanks, by the way, were very, very empty at the time.

Can anybody offer any assistance about what may be happening here? I
suspect there may be a vent problem somewhere…

Thanks again in advance.

Regards
Jeff Booth

Totally “normal”. But it may be worthwhile cleaning the valve in the front
right wing, by the charcoal cannister.
