I’m going nuts trying to get the final vacuum connections
done. The shop manual doesn’t seem to say much about it.
The parts book was a great help but doesn’t really detail
all of the connections. The stickers on the hood (EAC
5985, 6 and 7) are helpful but also a bit vague on a couple
connections, as is XJ6 Vacuum Diagram on the FAQ page of
this site. Taken together, it’s all making my head swim.
I’ve got a 1984 XJ6, engine # 8L148745 (gets all the
latest stuff). It’s a California (USA) spec car, left-hand
drive.
Long story short: I had to replace a blown head gasket. I
pulled the head and found it was warped out of tolerance.
I replaced it with a junkyard head that is straight (engine
number is higher than mine). The junkyard head came with
both manifolds already attached. Considering the
difficulty I had in removing the intake manifold from the
old head, I decided to leave it attached and use it. The
result is that I ended up with some extra hoses, wires, etc.
I had taken notes, photos, and tagged items during
disassembly, but obviously not well enough because I can’t
figure these last vacuum hose connections.

I’ve got a small hose connector on the Distributor.

I’ve got a small hose connector on the underside of the
intake manifold where the pipe meets the tank, at the
firewall end of the manfiold. See photo: https://flic.kr/p/

I’ve got a hose that snakes across the firewall from the
vacuum tank over behind the battery compartment. It’s got
a T-connector. I’ve got two no-connections. See photo:

I’ve got a connector on the firewall side of the
throttle body. See photo: https://flic.kr/p/F2fY8W -
I’ve got a hose that runs from the evap cannister inside
the front passenger-side wheel-well. The hose goes thorugh
an opening in the fender into the engine compartment and
snakes back along the finder. I’ve got another t-connector
and a length of hose, two no-connections. See photo:

I’ve got a vacuum regulator (no pictured) with three
hoses, none connected.
Photos of EAC 5985 (https://flic.kr/p/FkEGy9), EAC 5986
(https://flic.kr/p/FchkSY) and EAC 5987 (https://flic.kr/p/
FeyKPR).
I believe that the vacuum regulator hose marked Dist (on
the regulator itself) goes directly to the distributor.
The one that says CARB goes directly to the throttle body.
Does the one that says DELAY go to the hose connection
underneath the manifold? That’s the connection that’s most
mysterious to me.
If I read EAC 5985 correctly, I should put a T-valve on the
hose between the DELAY connection (wherever that is) and
connect to AIR CON… what? If I read the XJ6 Vacuum
Diagram correctly, I should use the T-valve for DELAY to
connect the underside manifold (I think) and the vacuum
tank. And the charcoal cannister gets connected between
the vacuum regulator and CARB. ?
Is that correct, or have I completely loused this up?
