[xj] Value of salvage xj

I have been offered the chance to purchase a no-running badly
rusted out US Federal 83 xj6. The leather interior is torn up,
there are large rust out holes at the front and rear
window/windscreen corners and the engine is partially disassembled.
All the parts appear to be within the vehicle trunk/boot or in the
backseat. This car is not rebuildable. It will be stripped of any
usable parts and sent to the salvage yard. A shed full of spare
electronics and mechanical parts sounds great to me. Can anyone
give me an idea of what a fair offering price would be for this
vehicle? I was thinking about the amount of US $200-$300. Does that
sound correct, high or low?

In reply to a message from David McNair sent Fri 22 Apr 2005:

I looked at some horrifically rusted XJ6s in the Chicago
area and they were asking $200-$400. As I was looking for
a rebuildable car at the time, I passed. But those had
assembled, running engines. So I think your $200-$300 range
would be about the high end. It is true that the car is
worth far more than that in parts, but if the owner believes
strongly enough about that, then let him disassemble it
and deal with selling all the parts… You’re doing him
quite a favor to get rid of the hulk and pay him a couple of
hundred in the process.–

Agreed on both counts. Last month, I bought two straight, (mostly) rust
free S2 XJ6Ls, one for $400 (no start) and one for $350 (no driveline at
all).

The no-start car is complete and rebuildable, though I keep finding
things that disturb me. The other one was a rescue, and I have evil
plans that should not be discussed within earshot of purists. (no, it’s
not getting a Chevy)

If he’ll take $200, and you have the time and space to part it out, I’d
go for it.
