[xj] Veneer wood

Hello all,
I am contemplating buying some new veneer/wood for my old washed out/cracked
dashboard. I have been looking into some aftermarket wood/veneer that is
already cut and ready to be applied. The cost is about $200 to $400 dollars
[depending on how many pieces and the type of wood chosen.] Does anybody
have any experience in this area? Can the wood be directly applied right on
top or am I looking at dashboard removal here. Does it look good? Or really
bad. Help!!
Regards, Michael

No - you gotta do the whole R&R.

Suggest you get the real thing from Paul’s in Florida. Don’t be penny-wise and pound foolish, you’ve come this far and by and large your car is very good looking.

Hi Michael,

  1. To do a proper job the wood will need to come out
  2. I recently saw a posting on new doorwood, but don’t remember if it was
standard XJ6 or VdP wood; they were cheap and new.
  3. Have you looked at prices for NEW manufactured dashes?
  4. I don’t believe in pre-cut veneers; these woodpanels were made by real
people, and sligh variations in size are possible. A pre-cut piece of veneer
will not allow for that, unless it is cut too large. In that case you are
much better off buying the veneer and vut it yourself.

All in all it can be done, but to obtain a really good result you need a lot
of patience and 2 right hands.
Also, if the North American specs VdP wood is the same as the euro spec, the
doortrim has inlays, of which I can’t see someone without experience
replacing with good result.

We don’t do SIII wood, but there are some people located in the US that do
and are on this list. I am sure they can be of further advice.
