[xj] Was offered $2500 for my Jaguar today

Do you know what I Paid for it?

Want to make REVERSE Work… trying to find someone that can
do ‘‘Band Adjustment’’

MAY spend $100 or $200 (Mechanics Price went up) to TRY to make
Wipers work, see if I can put the Plastic piece for bottom of
Steering wheel back on, also I can pull the Steering Wheel TOWARDS
me… Little things like this.

IF I can NOT get REVERSE back, WHAT should I TAKE for it!!!

And if you require, I can provide, in confidence, my Purchase
Price… Hint: its -Significantly- less than $2500.

Thanks - Joseph–

I would have taken the $2500. Judging why what you have described that
is wrong with it, I think its worth about what you paid. Consider that
cars 10 years newer are selling for about $3000 and in much better shape.

Yessss… Craig, you remember the PURCHASE PRICE! I had to quickly
say ‘‘That was off an Oldsmobile I had’’ when there was a piece of
Paper in the Trunk said $500…

I do wonder what should I do/way/accept when (if) he finds out that
REVERE doesnt work?

I dont even have a Jack, sO IF I could find a Socket or Buy it to
try… I cant attempt thsi myself. And my mechanic just got Promoted
and works for someone else and is on Path to own his own Shop… and
no longer does things like ‘‘Change Transmissions for $250’’ anymore.

:frowning:

This is why I ask Guidance. I can assure you, I LOOOOVE it, and I
need to determine the Seriousness of the Buyer which will in turn
determine my Commitment to ‘‘Sell’’ (Cash talks, BS Walks, must
change hands correctly) … Thank You.

Will miss Jag if I DO Sell it… Debating if I should pursue this
route. I DO need the Money and can bu inecpensive $600 nothing
wrong wit it Car… but it wont be a Jagiar.

Well, I’d be upfront with the potential buyer. If you need the money it
might be better to buy something that needs less work than your current
car. There is an old adage that there is nothing more expensive than a
cheap Jaguar. Come back to Jaguars when you have more money and can buy
a car in much better condition. That would give you more enjoyment out
of it, and cost less in repairs and maintenance.

Craig, Thats Temting. I cna tell you that I had a BMW that was very
Similar. Why is that relevant? Its 7 years later, and this
car ‘‘Replaces’’ the BMW that was STOLEN form me (I go outside and
1986 BMW 325es is no longer there, thanks to Car Thieves.) So. I
can tell you that… at 28, Yeah I can be ANNOYING sometimes, I am
Guilty and I try NOT to be, ill stop there. But, this Jaguar… has -
Potential!-

A Older guy form a Jaguar Car Club even mentioned ‘‘When im ready to
sell it, call him.’’ He ‘‘Restores’’ them. This is why I dont like to
tell peopl ehow much I paid for it… From an Alcoholic that didnt
even know how to change a FUEL PUMP! (I did that already Myself, it
was ‘‘Easy’’ I just paid close attention, and I think I got it right)
Or couldnt be botered… and it sat for more than a year, so I had
some Surprises…

Its a tough call!

As far as Reverse… IS a ‘‘Band Adjustmet’’ the FIRST STEP in
diagnosing NO REVERSE? IS that the thing that you do FIRST? It
actually DOES List that in Haynes. I have it but its not exactly
accessible to me, as all my Belongings are in said SIII at this
time.

Appreciate the Thread, I mentined a ‘‘Weird’’ behaviour of ‘‘I press
on Gas when its warmed up usually after it sat for a while, and
RPMs -Die- when I press Gas and come Back when I let off, unless I
stay on it, it revs after a pause’’.

Sell vs Keep. I can do Either. Issue is, I like the
car… - Joseph–

I very much agree with what Craig says here…
From the pictures you have a lot of rust issues, and no shop to work
in.
You’re young, and can find a jag in better shape for the same amount
as you are being offered, someday when you are in better shape
financially…
You are just getting started on that car…rust, gas tank, wiring,
tranny…
But has the guy that’s interested looked at your car ?
I hope it works out, it would be a good move, in any case.

Hi Bill!

The guy hasnt ‘‘Looked’’ at it, he seemed to like it. I presently
have all my Belongings in it, so im looking to remove them when/if
we agree to a Showing.

I Revved it up for him to ‘‘Show it off’’ a little, and keep it fresh
in his head… In Neutral, of course. And of course the Belts
screeched. :o

I hope it works. Im wondering if I should take $1000! Im wanting to
CAULK if not Bondo some Rust Spots, which have gotten bigger since
the last time… This is what I get for trying to wash the Car.

Also No Radio, No Reverse (Unless I keep it and just Go at it)
and … No Fuel Gauge working…

Im basically wondering my ‘‘Lowest Offer’’ as I think he was asusming
a fully functioning Unit for $2500. I DID mention ‘‘Im trying to fix
up all the little things, as if I were to keep it because I take
good care of my cars.’’ However, im sure Reverse is not a little
thing.

Debating whether to ask my mechanic to spend an hour Labor trying
the Band. It is listed in NHanyes, and would go a LOOONG way
towards sale, IF it worked.

If he doesnt want it ill keep the Car… I honestly cant tell.

  1. I do have a set of condensed instructions on band adjustment. If
interested, contact me off list and I will scan them for you.

  2. I think the odds of that making reverse work are way longer than
Las vegas odds. I recall your post on gunning the engine with the
trans in reverse in an effort to get it to grab. I cringed on
    readig that.

  3. I doubt that your buyer will pay $2500 for a car with no
reverse. Not even to co nsider the other foibles, rust being the
    leader.

  4. If yopu bail out now, ypou will save a lot of money tryoig to
get the car to a $2500. decent driver status .

As a play thing, ok, but that’s about it.

If asked about it’s foibles, be upfront as Craig advises.

If the guy would pay 42500. you should take the money, sign it over
and give him the keys and beat a rapid retreat.

Just my ideas.

Being as ‘4’ and ‘$’ is the same key, Carl, I think you agree and I’m
glad!
Joseph; I think if you get what you paid for it, and put the rest up
to experience and Tuition at The School of Hard Knocks, you’ll be
ahead…and if nothing else, park the Jag, buy that “good running
$600 car” you mentioned, and work on the jag when you can and when
you want to…Kim says she sent you all the books: Jag & Haynes.
If you remember, that was my suggestion quite a while ago, so that
you could keep your job which depends on reliability…
Good luck to you.

Don’t get too excited yet. I’m pretty sure you haven’t been offered
$2500 for your car - you’ve probably been offered $2500 for what
the buyer thinks it is - a fully working car, which it isn’t.
Having said that, there are all kinds of reasons people pay over
the odds - issues like the car being available right now, the car
being local for him etc. etc. You said in an earlier post what you
paid for it so there’s no point being coy. I think you said 350 or
450 but I’m not going to look it up. Get what you can for it and
buy a cheap reliable fuel-sipping car and get yourself a nicer Jag
when you have the money spare.

It would be a nice gesture to send the manuals back if you do get
rid of the car IMHO, unless the owner insists on them as part of
the deal. I would simply not mention them from your side.

Also, that is an excellent insight… Previous owner mentioned he

if he realizedthat he had sold his Car for %500 OBO ($350, yes) for
Just a FUEL PUMP having went on it (which it since went through one

I could go either way, folks. Honestly, its 60.40 in favor of ‘‘Keep

Joseph:
You have received very good advice from knowledgeable people here regarding
the issue of keeping or selling the car. If you can sell the car in good
faith (that is, not disguising its condition) DO SO. This car is in
miserable condition (sorry, but facts are facts); it has been neglected and
abused and it will continue to frustrate you and to cost you significant
amounts of money - which you probably do not have.

Sell it - but honestly, disclosing its faults (you don’t want to be the
“damned previous owner”) - and get a reliable, smaller car to get you to
work. There will always be Jaguars for you in the future.

In reply to a message from Dr. Gregory Andrachuk sent Sat 26 Jun 2010:

I cant believe im saying this Joesph, but I say dont sell.
Heres why:

  1. If you taking this long so take up an offer like that,
which is pretty much a win-win for you, Im afraid your to
say you already emotionally attached(common case).

  2. In my opinion, YOU wont be able to find a ‘‘more
reliable’’ replacement. Sure theres hondas galore out
there, but your not the type to just use and forget.
Whatever car youll end up with, you’ll find something to
fix, with more work to follow Im sure.

  3. The help you find here is truly one of a kind. You got
a good thing here, we all do. As for you, especially you,
thats one hell of thing to consider. I would know, my
previous cars where asian imports, and their forums dont
    even compare to this one.

eh but then again what do I know. After all this is coming
from a guy younger than you are. Just go with your gut
feeling, thats usually what it boils down to in the
end.–
