[xj] water pump

Stoped by after work, and when they cranked it up the water pump blew
out coolent. New pump is on the way. The top side is getting newer all
the time and I am getting poorer.

Hold on… wait a minute… etc. When i did my 4.2 it stood for two
years empty, when i refilled it it also spewed water out of the pump
seal… until a day later when the seal had swelled back up to normal
size, since then i have not seen a single drop. Anybody confirm ?

Dominic

Definitely not my 67 mustang!

Time to replace the water pump. Having never tackled one in this car I’m
wondering if anyone would have the answer to a few questions?
How difficult a job is this going to be? (hours…?)
Any particular pitfalls?
What’s the best access? ( Bonnet removal?)
Anyone have a step by step that they have found works the easiest?
New or rebuilt pump?

Thanks,

Kev

My water pump has started to leak again (yes, a fine vindication for those
who said it would inc. Goran, Fazal, Alex and, infact, me!) and have been
offered a nearly-new one from a friends S Type. Will it fit? It’s a 66 model
but I forgot to check the engine size, I’ll find out today.

I’ll just add my 2 cents since I just replaced the water pump on my '84
XJ6. Leave yourself plenty of time, and pay attention to which bolts
come
out of what, and you will be fine. Like some other cars I have done
this
job on, there is a lot of stuff hanging on the pump, so you spend a lot
of
time getting stuff out of the way and then back in the way, and then out
of the way again, because you forgot to do something else. But it is
pretty straight forward, the main problem being contorting yourself and
your arms to reach around to get at stuff, as the bonnet is sort of in
the
way. I found my rebuilt pump at Worldwide Auto Parts for an incredible
$39 with no core charge. But failing that, Jagbits has them for about
$90, and they are very helpful. I ordered the wrong one, and they took
it
back, no questions. Good people. I concur with the others–you can do
it, but don’t be in a hurry.–

I need to replace the water pump on my '85 XJ6. Does anyone have
any supplier recommendations. Any installation secrets I should
know? I’ve got the factory manual from JDHT. Thanks for your
help. Michael.–

The last one I bought from Coventry West (rebuilt), has been in the
car 16 years or more.

Clean all old gasket material off - that’s the biggest PITA IIRC.
Oh and one of those modern ‘‘belt clamps’’ might be handy for holding
the fan steady whilst removing those 4 securing nuts.

If there’s any chance you need to take out the radiator and have it
cleaned, now’s the time :-)! WP removal is much easier with rad out
of the way.–

There are several places you can get pumps even NAPA had
them. You will need to remove the upper radiator shroud to
make it easy then the four bolts on the pump which are a
fiddle. Pull the fan forward and remove with shroud.

Cleaning the old gasket is a fiddle but it must be clean.
Replace the lower rad hoses and the bypass. Also just above
the pump is a small piece of flex rubber fuel line on the
return to the tank. Replace this, it often leaks and drips
fuel onto the pump bearing.

As the radiator fluid is all removed check and replace all
other hoses at this time if they need it.

Now with the fan out check the viscous coupling and the fan
for cracked blades. If the blades show signs of cracks or
the coupling does not show resistance to turning replace it
all. Not that expensive.
