[xj] Waxing poetic

List:

Dr. G’s recent post regarding detailing reminded me of a question on
paint care.

I know what wax is and I know what compound is. But what is “glaze” and
when, if ever, do you use it?

Quick Story (would this post still qualify for the Tech List?)
My first car was a used 56 Buick, white in color. EVERY Saturday, I
would compound and wax it with Simonize past cleaner and paste wax , and
in later years, Blue Coral. All by hand! (That was BEFORE I was
married.)

One day I noticed some dark marks beginning to appear in the paint,
along a ridge line. Some time later, I realized I had rubbed right
through the paint. Youthful exuberance!

Steve, check your ridge lines!

Glaze or gloss is a sealer used after the cleaner, and before the wax. It
smooths the surface by filling swirl marks and other imperfections. And, on
another note, I do NOT favour yet another list.
