I drained the crankcase oil today and noticed there was no copper washer on
the
plug. I put a washer on, cleaned the outside of the opening and
was about to install the plug when I felt something odd in the opening. At
first I though it was the missing copper washer. However, after fiddling
with it (I was working from above the engine) it appears to be a spring? I
was wondering, could this be a helicoil?
Unfortunately, I pulled the first “ring” of the coil out of the opening?
It’s shaped just like a spring.
What should I do?
Regards
Lou

Safely or risky, Lou…?.
It’s virtually certain to be a helicoil, as you think, but it may be a
swarf from a too tightened sump plug. As the material of the sunp is
very thin the loss of threads, helicoil or original, may leave too
little left for safety. It depends a bit on if this is the only bit ever
coming out - now and before…
You first have to crawl under for a closer inspection - if it is a
helecoil; removal and renewal is the safe option. If it is a bit of
thread, installing a helicoil is again the safe option - alternatively
drilling and threading for a larger sump bolt.
However; if you can enter the old bolt properly and torque it to specs
with nothing giving, it will most likely be all right…

Lou!
Well Lou, I hate to inform you but somebody stripped that
thread and probably did’nt tell you. Its a helicoil insert.
This happened to me, the insert worked loose and came out.
I know that the local dealer did this at the 1K mile check
since nobody but me touched the car since it was new.
I have all the info. on this fix if you want to tackle it
yourself. I retapped the hole for a taper plug, and mine is
in there for 4 years now and works fine.
e mail me if you want this info. since its rather lengthy.
