[xj] [XJ] removing doors

Hi

I am in the process of replacing the passenger side sill panel on my SIII
Sovereign. I decided that the best way to drill out all of those spot welds
along the top edge of the door shuts would be to remove the doors. I
foolishly expected the door removal to be a simple job ;-(

The rear door was easy but the front door caused me problems. Basically the
problem is to do with the wiring. I expected to be able to remove all of the
wires inside the doors fairly easily as they would all have some kind of
plug/connector to remove wouldn’t they ?

Well most of the wires do have connectors except for the electric mirror
wires. I spent a long time feeling around inside the door looking for a
connector of some kind before attempting to remove the mirror. One of the
screws holding the mirror to the door just keeps turning so I cannot remove
the mirror to look for a connector inside it. In the end I just cut the
wires and will put bullet connectors back in when the door goes on.

Just a little annoying having to actually cut wires. ;-( anyone else done
the same thing ?

The car looks a little sad with no doors and the sill removed !

Regards

Hi Roger
8 years later…
Did you ever get a reply to this question? Am about to remove my doors for the first time (also to replace the sill!)

Kind regards, and apologies for resurrecting painful Jag memories
Niel

The connectors for the mirror wiring are up quite high in the door, close to the mirror itself. Typically the mirror is unfastened and pulled gently away and the wiring, with connectors, is carefully teased thru the hole and into the open.

If the mirror won’t come off things do get tricky…not merely because of poor access but also because the connector halves are wire-tied together. Thus the hope of getting your fingers on the connector and somehow wriggling it apart are dashed.

However…

I seem to recall that the mirror harness has two sections so, with one more easily accessible…once you’ve actually located it. But my memory is foggy here and LH vs RH doors will be different. It might be whichever door has the switch (obviously dependent of LHD vs RHD) has the two-piece harness.

Cheers
