[xj] XJ12C - One Piece Prop Shaft?

Looks like my 1976 XJ12C has a 3.07 rear end but also a one piece
prop shaft. This is unlike all the XJ12 manuals I have which
show a two piece shaft with a central joint that is mounted to
the underneath of the transmission tunnel. Naturally , the
mounting for the central bearing (bolted across the bottom of the
transmission tunnel) is missing too.

I see that the XJS has a one piece shaft. Did the V12 coupes
get the XJS shaft at the factory or did some PO retrofit this?
If a PO did this, is there a downside to leaving the one piece
shaft on the car - it works fine as far as I can tell.–

I installed a one piece driveshaft when I replaced my bw66 with a th400 in my '86 xj6. I’ve had no problems with it. In my opinion the two piece driveshaft’s design is good for reducing noise transfer to the rest of the body, that’s about it. With twice as many u-joints as a one piece and that middle carrier bearing, you’re jsut asking for problems with driveshaft play and vibration as these components age. I haven’t noticed any increase in noise with my one piece and would never switch back.

In reply to a message from Clbgdawg@aol.com sent Mon 12 Aug 2002:

Collin,

Thanks for the reassurance. I now suspect the whole rear end is
off an XJS as the ratio is 3.07 (43/14) and it has that XJS one
piece prop shaft. Pretty sure it still has a BW12 though I will
have a closer look next time I’m under there!–
