Folks,
Kudos to Tom for his efforts with wiring diagrams! Having
recently tried to puzzle out the S2 eyestrain chart in the
Haynes manual, I’m very sympathetic to legible diagrams.
Perhaps someone can help me. I’m in the process of trying
to resuscitate a 1978 S2 (FI, US market) that has been apart
for way too long and cannot figure out what connects to a 2
wire connector in the vicinity of the two large rectangular
multiwire connectors just aft of the water rail/fuel
injection manifold. The wires entering the connector coming
through the firewall appear to be black with white stripe
and black.
Also, this particular car has a ballasted coil and the
ignition amplifier mounted on the crankcase right behind the
power steering pump, rather than on the front of the intake
manifold as in the S3 FI cars. The bundle of wires that I
think go to the coil contains both a white/longitudinal
blue stripe wire and a white/spiral blue stripe wire (along
with several others). From the various FI-related wiring
schematics I’m guessing that WU refers to the longitudinal
striped wire and W/SU or sometimes WS/U refers to the spiral
striped one. I’ve hooked up the spiral striped wire to the
low voltage side of the ballast resistor (coil negative
terminal), as I believe it goes to the tachometer, while
I’ve hooked up the white/longitudinal blue striped wire to
the other end of the ballast resistor which I think goes to
the solenoid ballast relay to provide full battery voltage
while cranking. It’s possible that a PO modified the coil
wiring, as the ballast resistor has only two terminals
(unlike the 6 shown in the Haynes manual), and there’s a
very non-Jaguar-like terminal block in the wiring, as well.
I’d appreciate any suggestions before I try the ‘‘smoke
test’’ on my 34 year old wires! Some additional differences
relative to the S3 FI cars are that this car does not have
an air injection pump or any of the piping associated, and
it doesn’t have the vacuum delay in the distributor vacuum
routing, merely being routed directly from the throttle body
to the distributor.

Tom thats a great effort. Certainly the diagram seems much easier
to follow in colour, One can see the logic behind the layout. Pity
Haynes hadn’t thought of it.
