[xj] XJ6 vibration when taking off from a dead stop

Hello, I have been noticing this in the past but just ignored it.
When I take off from a stop sign their is a 1-2 second vibration
coming from under the car that vibrates. Any ideas what causes
this and is their any real worries? Once the car is rolling on the
road their is no vibration just smooth saling.

Difficult to diagnose without hearing the vibration check
rear gearbox mounting or exhaust touching bodywork under
staring torque as you pull away. basically check under car
for anything loose, there are some panels screwed to the
u/s maybe some screws are missing.–

JR, this can be engine mounts, or either the rear mount for the trans or the
centering mount for the driveshaft, farther back. They have rubber parts that
can deteriorate.–

Sounds like the center drive shaft bearing is going,
and might check and replace the 3 U joints at the
same time.

Hi
I have something similar happening except I get a pronounced
rumbling when pulling away. Some folks have suggested the center
joint (bearing??), possibly the rear diff.

I was poking around under the spare car today (87) preparing to lug
out the engine and transmission, so I was trying to work out how to
disconnect the drive shaft that is hidden behind those panels
someone mentioned. I’m wondering which end is easiest to attack
from to disconnect the shaft (huh huh huh, he said shaft). There is
a thick plate underneath the very back of the tranny. I took out
about 40 bolts (actually I guess it was about 6) but found that
this plate is also held on by a couple of laterally-mounted bolts
that I can’t get at with a socket. (this isn’t the one that holds
the back of the tranny under that big spring, it’s right behind
that one). But even if I could get that plate off, I don’t think I
can get to all the bolts holding the drive shaft to the
transmission. Maybe there is an easier way to get one end or the
other off?–

I recently removed my drive shaft and hade it overhauled ( center
replaced, ujoints replaced, and balanced). You can remove the 4
bolts holding the driveshaft to the tanny flang with a long
extention across the plate and jamming a ratchet or air ratchet up
in the small gap between the plate and the thin shroud. The good
driveshaft eliminated all of my vibration problems. 87 xj6vp–

In reply to a message from JR sent Thu 9 Oct 2003:

I believe that information in the archives says that this condition
is usually caused by the driveshaft carrier bearing being out of
alignment. It is easily adjusted by loosening the 2 bolts on the
plate beneath it, and prying it over. Often the correct position is
all the way to the right side of the car, or close to it, and it is
a question of trial and error to get it right.

Ok, so I haven’t checked the Haynes manual, which may have more detail
than the workshop manual (don’t have access to it, or the car, right now).
I have, however, worn my eyes out on the parts and service manuals
(PDFs).

The ‘drain the radiator’ instructions are pretty simple – remove the
radiator drain plug (which I’m assuming I can find underneath the
radiator) and remove the engine block drain plug.

So where IS the engine block drain plug? The closest I’ve come is a
couple of mysterious what-look-like-plugs on the intake side of the
block…–

G’day Bill,

It all a lie! There is no ‘radiator drain plug’ on a SIII. The SII had a
drain plug fitted into the bottom of the transmission oil cooler, which lies
beneath the radiator, but the SIII cooler is a different design and has no
such plug. You have to undo a hose clamp and ease off a hose end.

The engine drain plug is on the exhaust side between the dipstick and the
auto transmission flange and is usually a brass bolt, though it could be
painted and difficult to detect.

The plugs on the intake side are end plugs to the oil galleries going to the
main bearings. Undo one you’ll get oil, not water. Well, hopefully not
water! :-))

I wouldn’t waste money on a Haynes manual.

Jeff Watson.> Ok, so I haven’t checked the Haynes manual, which may have more detail

Jeff: actually, the early Series III (up to and including 1982) DID have the
drain plug in the oil cooler. It was eliminated after that. Sadly the
manuals were rarely updated to include vital pieces of information like
that. And yes, the engine block drain plug is exactly where you say it is,
usually painted black like the rest of the block.

I second your experiences, Jeff…

Being inquisitive I pursued the trail arriving at a spam filter at the
server. Which incidentally doesn’t seem to have an even moderately
trained monkey to respond to enqieries.

So, Bill, if you are wondering why you are not receiving much mail ex

Thanks, Jeff - that will save me a lot of time looking for the drain
plug on the radiator. I love Gregory’s comment about “the manuals

(My girlfriend’s comment upon hearing that - “And you do this by choice?”)

That’s exactly why I asked first, Jeff.

I wouldn’t waste money on a Haynes manual.

I haven’t found it useful in any regard thus far, which is why I rarely
think to consult it. But hey, it was cheap, and I don’t mind if it gets
ratty hanging around in the trunk.–

P.S. On a separate note, regarding bounced mail, yes I have several,
layered, highly aggressive SPAM defenses in place (an advantage to running
my own servers). I’ve relaxed an older rule that was blocking some of the
.au direct mail, which should help. If I do bounce your mail, please drop
me a hint on-list and I’ll contact you directly to find the problem.

(I am subscribed to the list, and do read all the list traffic. Heck,
I’ve read most of the archives at this point. Jag-lovers keeps limiting
my bandwidth, thinking I’m a spider. )

Bill, now you too see why I painted all these hard to see items yellow! The
SII has a drain plug on the heavy pipe between the hoses under the rad. That
pipe is the trans oil cooler. The SIII has no such drain, so you get to pull
the lower water hose off! The block drain is back above the dipstick hole.–

And here is something else. I had a vibration on my 1981 S3 on
takeoff. I found a one inch crack in the plate on the subframe that
holds the left side engine mount. When I put my foot down on the
accelerator under load the engine would twice in the enigne bay
more than it should. Took me ages to work it out. But I got it
welded up and my problem was gone. I understand that this is NOT a
comon cause of vibration on takeoff, but it would take you only a
minute to check.
