Thank you for posting your results and letting us know that a replacement Hazard Switch fixed your problem. After owning and working on several Series III saloons over the past 19 years sometimes I get lucky. 
I hope that your post helps others who have this problem and search the archives for answers.

The 9-pin version was the later one, Ick - nominally fitted to the S3…
This was likely more ‘failsafe’ than the 8-pin one - less prone to internal failures giving symptoms you had. Changing the switch, as you did, was right and proper - well done…
