[xj40] 1990 xj turns over but does not start

Well this is kind of an emergency request… My car is on the side
of the road… After being on the freeway at night my car lost
power gradually then quit… Replaced bat and she sounds like she
is almost there to start but doesnt. I pulled coil wire and hit the
key… spark is bright orange… I do not smell fuel… No codes
anyone any ideas I can do on the fly to get her started and
home…??? thanks–

You should buy a new crankshaft position sensor and fuel pump relay to have
in the car as spares.

Spark should be bright blue. I’d recommend you replace the crankshaft
position sensor with a new unit, takes a 5 mm Allen wrench socket adapter,
am 18" extension and a ratchet handle. You’ll also need to clip some wire
ties. That’s the most likely culprit, and even if it doesn’t work you’ll
have a spare.

If that doesn’t do it, and you don’t hear the fuel pump run for a second
when you switch ignition on (listen for a buzz/whine at left rear wheel
well), replace the fuel pump relay. If you still get no start and no gas
smell at the tailpipe, it’s probably the fuel pump power supply wiring that
needs a look, write back.

Check the on-line XJ40 book for more information.

Oh yeah, I should have asked - did your check engine light go on? If so,
turn on the ignition but don’t crank, press the VCM button and tell us what
message shows up in the odometer display.

In reply to a message from Lokensgard sent Sat 4 Dec 2004:

Thanks,
The coil wire spark is not blue… I will run resistance check
first on the coil… I suspect coil and sender as I experienced
this same thing years ago in a GM product… The simple quite and it
turned out to be the ignition amp. That switch had shorted…
Yes, I do agree that crank sensor might be bad, but car was running
well, I will check that next… I do not smell any fuel at all
anywhere… The fuel pump can be heard at the rear… I will get
back to you after I have made some measurements… Thanks
