[xj40] 1991 Jaguar XJ6 VDP - Stuttering when Accelerating

Hello everyone. I’m trying to bring back to life my Vanden
Plas. It’s been sitting on my driveway for about 2 years. It
starts up and idles fine. When I attempt to accelerate down
the street it begins the stutter and fails to accelerate
until it dies. The exhaust occasionally pops as well. I
figured I’d ask for help before I started replacing parts. I
was thinking the Idle Air Valve was bad. I can’t explain why
though. Any help on the matter would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you.–

First, check fuel pressure. It may well be a malfunctioning
evaporative emissions system. You can test it by leaving
the fuel filler cap loose. If the stuttering/dying goes
away, you’ve narrowed the issue down.–

Thanks Pete. Will remove the gas cap and see if the
stuttering continues.–

Second thing to do might be to remove all the intake
plumbing and clean it out - throttle body clean up wouldn’t
hurt either!

good luck–

Pretty classic symptom of poor fuel pressure/flow that can’t
keep up with demand when the engine is under any kind of load.

Most commonly, the seal between the fuel pump and canister
body fails at the crimped on metal retainer. The pump works
fine but can’t pressurize the rest of the system.–

Hi Daniel!

I had the exact same symptoms when the fuel pressure check
valve failed including the popping exhaust sound. The valve
is located on the top of the fuel pump canister. I my case a
blue donut seal had burst allowing some fuel to flow back in
the canister and that’s why the fuel pressure was too low
for acceleration. I uploaded pictures when I did that job.
But before you dig in the gas tank, check the fuel pressure.–

Whoa Win!

You beat me by 1 min. 15 sec.
I wanna clear my previous post. The failed blue seal caused
the problem in my case. The check valve failed years before
that. Now I have an inline valve since I bypassed the
original check valve and the seal.–

What is the condition of the gas in the tank? Did you add
fresh gas or dry gas to what is in the tank? If the car has
sat for 2 years there may be water or sediment in the tank
that is sloshing around when you move the car.You may want
to replace the fuel filter and see what comes out of the old
filter to give you an idea of what the condition of the gas
is. Cary–

I see. I will be working on the car this weekend. I will
check the condition of the gas and the seal. Thank you guys
for your input. I will report my findings on Monday.–

Anyone have pictures of the seal mentioned? I think I may be having this issue. I know his is an old thread

That seal is part of the pump assembly in the internal fuel pump plastic can - there might be some pics available on the old site, try various keyword searches here

I just discussed this with one of the fellows at Welsh Enterprises. Apparently this is an inherent problem in both the XJS and XJ40 with the earlier 4.0L. Jaguar at one time had a replacement kit at an outrages cost but it is no longer available. I am going to pull my fuel tank from my 94 XJS FHC within the next two weeks and execute this work. I have been trying to resolve this issue for over a year on this car. I hop[e this is my salvation. A report will be forth coming.

Stephen

I just cleaned all my grounds and relays in the engine bay I want to say that the “stuttering” that I was experiencing in my other thread isn’t happening as of right now.
