A new accumulator solved one of my brake light problems.

Have you done any testing to the system such as pumping the
brake pedal to see how many pumps you get before the pedal
goes hard? Test is done without a running engine.

Bryan’s test procedure is –

''Turn the ignition key ‘ON’ to position (I) to
operate the Teves pump. When the pump stops, turn the
ignition key ‘OFF’.

How many full applications of the brake do you get before
you loose brake boost pressure (i.e. the pedal ‘goes hard’)?
It is sometimes easier to judge that if you operate the
brake pedal with the heel of your hand rather than the less
sensitive foot and leg!

You should get 25 to 30 (or more) applications of the brake
before you lose brake boost. If you get significantly less
than that, suspect the Teves accumulator sphere and replace
it with an AC Delco part number 25528382. ‘’–

Fred,

When the ‘BRAKE’ light appears, does the ‘ABS’ warning light
appear too?

If not,it is unlikely to be an accumulator boost pressure
problem but if it is John has told you how to check it.

You can prove that by pressing the VCM button when the
‘BRAKE’ warning light is illuminated. You will see on the
LCD screen either ‘PAD’ or ‘FAIL’. If the latter than it is
a brake boost problem, but it is more likely to be ‘PAD’ in
which case it is a brake pad wear sensor signalling a
problem. That problem could be a genuine brake pad ‘worn to
limits’ warning or, as is often the case, the flying lead
from the pad wear sensor is being snagged by the rough worn
rim of the brake rotor whenever you press the brake pedal
and is therefore shorting to ground where the insulation has
been worn through.

You have the choice of removing the front left wheel or the
right rear wheel to inspect the pad/sensor/wire because you
only have them in that position on your car.–

when I jab or quickly hit my brakes the antilock and brake
lights come on the dash. Pedal is slightly soft compared
to other vehicles I have owned. Is this typically a sphere
issue?–

While the ‘BRAKE’ and the ‘ABS’ light are illuminated, press
the VCM button. If the LCD display reads ‘FAIL’ then you
have either (or both) low brake fluid in the reservoir or
low brake pressure in the Teves accumulator sphere.

The brake fluid level is of course easy to check but if you
have a failing Teves accumulator then the brake operation
will go ‘hard’ - not ‘soft’ as you describe - when you lose
brake boost servo function.

If while the warning lights are illuminated you press the
VCM button and the LCD display reads ‘PAD’ then that
indicates worn brake pads or a fault in the pad wear sensor
circuit, but ordinarily that would not flag an ‘ABS’ warning
light as well as the ‘BRAKE’ warning light’.–

did hit the vcm button and it says fail.
Checked fluid level, it is already higher than max.
I did the other things suggest in other posts. I start the
pump let it run till it stops, that is only a second or 3,
then I pump the brakes, first pump the pedal bottoms out on
something, it if far from the floor. It takes probably 35
pumps until it gets rock hard. Where next. Thanks–
