[xj40] 3.2 1994 - door locks, actuators, latches

Hi,
I finally managed to find some spare time to sort out
‘broken rear door handle’ Doors didn’t open from the
outside. I removed everything and found plastic bit on the
door latch broken which connects the handle with the door
latch. Not really repairable so I’ve bought a used
replacement on eBay and fitted it and now the handle works.
Problem is with central locking and the actuator/or the
latch itself.
The actuator doesnt seems to be strong enough to move lock
up and goes up a bit and then down again. I took the new and
old latch out and checked them and its really hard to move
that plastic bit up. I have used some oil with it and it did
help a bit but its still pretty stiff.
Should they be like that or is it time to replace the
actuator? Did someone managed to repair it?(I didnt have
enough time yet to check whats inside of it)
Alternatively what do You use to ‘loose’ the door mechanism?
Grease? Oil? WD40? Something else?–

The door actuators can be taken in two pieces by a flat screw
driver. Be careful you can hurt your hand easily. There’s a small
motor inside that needs to be cleaned. See my pictures in the XJ40
albums. I changed my email and the pictures I uploaded before that
are not present when you click on the button on the right side of
my email. So you need to go to the XJ40 pictures with image index
and find my album where I worked on an actuator.
Good luck!

I had the same problem when changing the rear door handles on a 91,
I sprayed some graphite from local parts store on the mechanism and
manually worked it by hand 8 or 10 times. This corrected the
problem. Hope your problem is solved that easily

I too had a ‘‘weak’’ actuator. I lifted the rubber shaft seal and
sprayed two good shots of WD40 and worked the lock up and down
about two dozen times and it worked great. As preventative maint.
I lubed the other three actuators. Door locks have been working
great so far, about four years now. Still need to fix my broken
front pass. door handle though.
Not sure if this is a good practise, but it worked for me.
Good luck,
Jeff–

Honestly I havent got a clue how You put it apart  Tried
my best, cut the actuator sides with a knife but it didnt
brake in two. Something is holding it in the middle. I ended
with a spare actuator fitted and the problem was still
there. Finally figured that the plastic bit which moves with
the actuator was a bit wobly due to continuous use and if I
held it closer to the actuator it worked fine. Its now
sorted and working fine with an extra metal clip.
I have also used graphite spray with all locks and that
worked perfect. Much better than any other oil or wd40. They
all worked as good as new now.
I have also found that instead of using a new linkage clip
BEC2603 its easy to use a screw nut on the door link. Makes
a big difference.
Took me almost 4 hours to do all 4 locks
Thanks all for help.–

Hello!

I’m glad everything worked out for you. If I remember correctly I
also used a knife to take apart the actuator. I’m not sure if
there’s any clips that hold the two pieces together but I used a
duct tape to hold them together.
Thanks for the tips about the door mechanism, it always comes
handy.

Well lads, I just changed one of the rear handles and just like everyone else in this old thread, that rear door’s central locking actuator doesn’t work properly.
When I unlock the doors with the remote, this one sort of half pops up momentarily before returning to the locked position. It did this occasionally in the past too but now that the handle is new and working, I’d like to have that damn door operational again!

Classic case of the linkage needing adjustment and/or lubrication. My '94 used to act as you describe when the outside temperatures turned cold, then would return to normal when temps warmed up. There is info in the archives about that dang fiddly nylon clip used to adjust the linkage. PITA.

Trouble is, I can’t open the damn door - any ideas?

Can you not manually pull up the lock knob to unlock the door?

No. It doesn’t seem to actuate anything when I do that. It doesn’t come up all the way - I even tried opening the window and grabbing it in the up position but no joy.
I’ll try removing the uppermost trim (I THINK I can do that with the door closed) - maybe the trim is preventing the button from coming up all the way to the unlock position.

I seem to recall a long-ago post that stated the rear seat could be removed (assuming the door opposite the locked one can be opened) to provide access to remove the door card from.the locked door.

OK thanks Mike I’ll give it a shot. Maybe I just need to loosen the door card at the top…maybe even an extra stubby philips screwdriver will be able to get in there to remove the arm rest? I’ll have a go tomorrow.

I lowered the window and gripped the lock button as it momentarily shot up and down, keeping it in the up position. All in all an action very reminiscent of “whack-a-mole”…nevertheless, door unlocked and I was able to remove the door card.
I think the problem may be with the actuator, will look deeper tomorrow.

Larry - here is some info about cheap replacement actuators, if you decide the actuator is the problem:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike!

I have 2 spare Jag ones, will test them today. Not sure if they are L & R fitment exclusively or universal but at least I’ll have one if they are. Have to change plugs though, the spares have the big round ones from an earlier car.

Larry

Well it wasn’t the actuator, the problem was in the latch assembly itself. I ended up swapping out the whole thing but of course to get it out I had to release the window frame and lift it up to clear the mechanism.
Bit of a chore, but at least I now have four doors that lock, unlock, open and close.

Job well done. Thanks for the update.

Larry, I’m glad you found the problem. Did you get the handle off of your parts car? I ordered two front (5 wire) universal actuators. The passenger front quit working and while it was plugged in, drained the battery in two days. I found Mike’s wiring in the archives. Will do the soldering of the OEM plug soon.

Hey Joe, No I had a spare (NOS) handle in stock. I bought it way back from a member here when I thought I’d broken the handle but as it turned out it was the latch mechanism that had broken, not the handle.

I didn’t really need to change it this time as the one on the car was still good but I did anyway and put the one off the car on the shelf for “next time”
