[xj40] 3.2 that will not start

Hi all

We had a 1993 3.2 arrive at the workshop today that has been branded a non
runner.
I suspect a dud fuel pump but have not as yet been able to get a pressure
guage inline.
However, if we crack the fuel rail there is certainly no shortage of fuel
pressure present, I am aware that low pressure through a small orifice can
appear high and be misleading but there is a good gush out of open pipe both
at the 2 sec prime and when running.

Ok, if we repeatedly turn her over she will occasionaly fire up and stutter
on 3 or 4 cylinders and ig done so gently will actually rev to 3000rpm. 99
out 100 however it will not run, try to fire but not much else.
I cannot believe that there is insufficient fuel pressure to idle properly.
Usually when the fuel pump begins to die the car would stutter at high
speeds but probably idle ok until such time the pump says thanks but no
thanks.
The story is that the owner drove the car without any issues until one day
she stuttered to a halt. He managed to get her home but the car would not
start properly thereafter. This sounds a little too sudden for fuel pump
failure to be honest.
No error codes are present unless we manage to get her started and rev her
up ( on 3/4) we then will get a FF11 which is not too surprising really as
the car would appear to be running lean.

The previous owner has done the following which we have double checked
New CPS
New Cap/rotor/leads etc
Very healthy spark, no issues there we believe

We have test by substitution checked
ECU
Maff
Fuel Pump Relay

Cleaned the intake but there was no real evidence of the common gunge in
there.

Low fuel pressure aside, any ideas ?

We are not overly concerned as may well dismantle the car (since that is
what we do), it is however , potentially quite a nice car and if it proves
an easy fix then it will stay on the road

Phil,

Oxy sensor heater relay (yellow base on firewall) or fuel
pressure regulator - but youneed to put the fuel pressure
test rig onit, don’t you to rule those in or out?–

Heater relay and FPR both test ok, you are of course quite right in that I
need to confirm fuel pressure at the rail in order to prove one way or
another.
I guess really I was just prodding the forum for some other ideas or input
overnight untill I go back in tomorrow.
It isn’t something we will devote too much time to however as time spent
trying to get her going could be spent removing that very nice Jaguar
towbar

problem found but not yet cured. A tank full uf rust does not help
Pump is fine (39psi) but there is a coating of rust on the insdie of the
tank.
New filter/pump and tank will be fitted over the next few days
