[xj40] 89 XJ40 drivers door lock

I have been having a LOT of problems with my drivers door
lock. I changed out the handle about 2 years ago, and things
were working fine until recently when the drivers door lock
developed several symptoms:

  1. turning the key does not raise the inside lock knob
(intermittant)… I can feel/see the knob start to come up,
but then it stops while the key continues to turn; this
necessitates my unlocking the front passenger door to pop
the rear door lock knobs, and then walking back around to
the drivers side, opening the rear driver-side door, and
reaching in to pull up the front door inside lock knob. Even
then, the knob is very hard to pull and if it slips while
pulling on it, it relocks the other doors, so I have to
    start over again. Frustrating.

  2. sometimes the key simply would not turn in the lock.

  3. if the drivers door did happen to unlock (which it did
quite regularly at first, but rarely in recent weeks), it
did not unlock the other doors.

During all this, I had my independent Jag mechanic work on
it… he put in a new lock cylinder with levers, saying the
old one was worn, and the door worked as in 3) above, and
sometimes as 2), but then 1) again became the rule.

In frustration I took the door panel off the other day, took
the handle out, lubricated it, and managed to get myself in
far more trouble.

I have an official XJ40 shop manual on a CD, but I find the
descriptions sketchy, and lacking diagrams with parts
labelled, which makes the sketchy description almost
useless. Nothing really shows what rod is attached to what,
nor does it show the adjustments.

To make a long story short, I had great difficulty trying to
get the door lock working, and at one point I accidentally
lowered the electric window at the wrong time and bent one
of the handle/lock rods; now I am not even sure what rod
goes where (since I’ve had them off the handle so often),
and the few times I’ve attempted to test the door, I cannot
open it again, nor can I raise the lock knob manually… I
actually have to reach my hand in (door inner panel removed,
luckily, just in case) and pop the rods off the handle
levers in order to allow the inside door handle to open the
door.

I cannot see the lower ends of the rods, I’m unable to
remove them to properly straighten the bent rod, and don’t
know how to adjust them properly.

By feel, I can tell that the two rods that attach to the
handle (lock lever and handle rocker) both attach to a
sliding plastic block, one slightly higher on the block than
the other. I am now not sure which rod attaches to what at
the handle end nor am I sure how the mechanisms function. I
assume one rod is supposed to open the door by moving the
sliding block, while the second prevents the first from
moving the block if the lock knob is down.

Can anyone help, or point me to an understandable
description of how the lock works and how to properly attach
and adjust the rods so that I can close and successfully
reopen the door???–

Hi Wayne

If I were you I would look at the passanger door rods etc to guide you what
fits where on the drivers door.

Hope this helps.

Thanking You

In reply to a message from Les Sargent sent Wed 9 Feb 2005:

I finally got the mechanical mechanisms (driver’s door latch
and lock) working OK, but the driver’s door seems to be ‘‘out
of the loop’’ for the electric door opening system.
Locking/unlocking the driver’s door doesn’t affect any of
the other door locks, and locking/unlocking the front
passenger door affects the two rear doors but not the
driver’s door. So I’ve got items 1 and 2 resolved, but not
item 3.

Anyone have any hints and tips, or troubleshooting techniques?–
