Can you tell which area of the trunk gets wet? forward left
corner, right side, rear, under spare, etc? Lots of times the
general area will give a clue as to where to look.
We’ve had more than our fair share of rain in the mid-Atlantic
area, and I found the area around the fuel filler to be awash –
full right to the brim – today when I went to fill her up. Had to
look around all the junk in the trunk to find a syphon before I
cound remove the filler cap.–

sounds to me like the drain line in the rubber boot around
the filler neck is plugged up. It is routed through the trunk.–

My vote is for the black plastic trim attachment screw holes
on the sill below the lower vertical edge of the trunk lid.
Water collects and lies there after rain or washing because
of the forward slope of the sill and then drains in to a
cavity beneath the sill before running forward along the
channels under the carpet on the sloping trunk floor and you
find that the area below the spare wheel at the front of the
trunk is where the dampness appears.

If you look underneath the rear bumper behind the ‘skirt’,
you will see four round black rubber ‘plugs’. Carefully
prise one of those out and see if any water pours out. There
should be evidence of a yellow cavity sealing substance
sprayed inside that area. You could re-treat it whilst its open.

Remove the black trim, and note the four(?) plastic inserts
in the holes in the sill which take the screws. Clean
everything up and when dry, squeeze a small blob of domestic
clear silicone sealant over the plastic insert/hole before
re-fitting the black plastic trim. That seals the screw
holes and you should have no more problems from that area.

However, once wet, that boot carpet needs a really thorough
drying out. Leave it outside in strong sunshine for a few
days so that the UV kills the fungus that causes the smell!

[BTW, did you check the large metal blanks in the vertical
face of the forward bulkhead of the trunk behind the carpet
trim / spare wheel? In their position behind the
differential, they are particularly vulnerable to corrosion
from road spray if not properly protected with underseal.
They are about as substantial as unprotected paint-tin lids
and rot readily!]–

Mine was the same as Bryan said. I also did as he
recommends, but it still got in. My solution was to apply a
liberal circle of sealant about the 25mm diameter around the
hole as a ‘‘gasket’’ then screw the plastic plate back in. No
more leaks. Rgds Terry–

Bryan please…Can show me a photo about this Place so we check correctly and rightly

See item #5 in this illustration.

It is attached by 4 screws to the body and the water leaks in to the boot via those four screw hole plastic inserts.

I would check to see that you don’t have rust under the rubber gasket on the rear screen, it seems there was a dearth of sealant on some cars on the vertical side of the screen which allowed water to seep down this sits and rust ensues in the corner.
