[xj40] 89XJ40 Vacuum brake booster conversion problem

Yikes!..HELP…I’ve just finished gathering all the parts for my
vacuum brake conversion on my 89XJ40 and I noticed that the
thickness of the brake booster I purchased is 6 1/4’’ and I’m using
a 1/4’’ adapter plate. so that would be 6 1/2’’ from the pedal box
to the master brake cylinder.

The original hydraulic brake actuator is 5 3/8’’ long. It looks
like moving the master cylinder that extra 1 1/8’’ forward is going
to give me some clearance issues and a problem with the brake lines
on the master cylinder.

If you have this conversion (LHD) could you please measure the
distance you have between the pedal box and the back of the master
cylinder (effectively the thickness of your booster and the adapter
plate) and let me know what it is.

I’m really interested to see if the brake booster they sent me is
too fat! It’s suppose to be for a 1987 XJ6.–

That sounds right, I just measured my car, and I’m calling it 6 1/2". You do
need to relocate the coolant res. On my car I notice the lines are out of
the plastic clips, but they reach no problem. I don’t recall disturbing the
brake hydraulics at all.

Dennis. You do not have disconect the master if the coolant res.
is moved forward as per the instructions I sent, it will fit. John.–

Alan…Thanks for taking the time to measure your brake booster for
me. I guess it will fit in there after all.

I was thinking of using a #16 sledge hammer to thin it down a
little, but just leaving it alone will be a much more elegant
solution. (Force vs Finess)!–
