[xj40] 93 xj40 will not start

When trying to start car nothing happens. All lights and power
options work but the car will not start. at one time I was able to
lock and unlock the car then it would start or open and shut the
doors and it would start, no more. Last in time it sat overnight
and started in the morning. I live in a hot climate (Florida) and
the car gets very hot inside during the day. Car statrted fine this
morning and now will not start. Any suggestions–

In reply to a message from jjjeroski sent Tue 1 Jun 2010:

When it doesn’t start, do you mean it won’t crank or does it
crank merrily but not fire?

If the latter, you need to check if the problem is lack of
fuel or lack of spark - or both. If both, suspect the crank
position sensor (CPS) which sometimes can cause intermittent
no-start situation when it gets hot.

The next time it won’t start, check if you have a spark from
the HT lead from the coil to ground (pull the lead from the
centre of the distributor cap and hold close to a metal part
of the engine or body while someone cranks it).

Whenever you first turn on the ignition, do you hear the
fuel pump give its short priming burst? (Listen at the open
fuel tank filler neck while someone turns the ignition on
and off a few times)

If the problem is that it will always start when cold, but
refuses to start on a hot engine on a hot day, the problem
could be fuel starvation - insufficient fuel pressure in the
fuel rail. If that is the case, try the key cycling trick -
turn the ignition on/off/on a few times before engaging the
starter until immediately after the final ‘on’. If it then
fires right up, report back for a possible solution.–
