[xj40] automatic transmission leaking at vent

Have a 94, 4L, with a automatic transmission that appears to have a
chronic leak of transmission fluid from the vent located at the top
of the tail. This condition has processed since I purchased the car
used six years age. Any suggestions–

Sorry, but transmission fluid is always low due to leak. I see
from other postings that the pressure relief valve is localed in
the tail and the machanic commented, leak could be the result of
excess pressure.–

OK, so if it is not overfilled, here are the other
possibilities for leakage at that breather as suggested in
the good book:-

  • Incorrect oil specification (flush & refill - proper stuff)
  • Breather cover missing (replace)
  • Breather cover ‘O’ ring faulty (renew ‘O’ ring)
  • Breather cover loose (renew lock washer)–

Found the problem of the chronic transmission leak. My mechanic used a generic run of the mill seal while a seal with an outside rubber coating was required other wise fluid would leak between the transmission case and the seal. This was told to me by and old transmission mechanic in town Brian. “AKA whisky lips”. He knew his transmissions.
