[xj40] boy am i frosted/missing lens covers

i discovered this morning, after retrieving my car from the dealer thursday
night, that both front turn signal lens covers vanished while the car was at
the dealer. i thought something was odd when i saw a pretty focussed beam
straight ahead at night with the left signal on when i left the lot. i
looked this morning and no lens covers. my guess is the car was vandalized
on their lot, so we will be having a discussion.

other than than, i hit 100 for a long stretch on an interstate driving home
from an errand. grin.

Wow Eliot … bummer, man.

If just one was missing, I would wonder if it fell off during a
test drive or something.

I can’t imagine someone vandalizing a Jag by removing a pair of
turn signal lenses … seems like it would be much easier
and ‘‘effective’’ to key the paint, etc. - if it was a matter of
grabbing something on a dare, seems like they would go for the
leaper or one of the emblems.

I’d hate to think it was a fellow Jag owner who liked what he
needed … eww

Anyway, shouldn’t cost much to replace them - and nothing, if the
dealer/shop does the right thing in the situation!–

I recently had the XJR grille ‘lifted’ from my car when it was parked up. I
was seriously pissed off!
Have I missed something however , why should the dealership ‘do the right
thing’ when you have something nicked from the car?

errr Phil … b/c it’s the LAW!

In U.S., whenever a customer entrusts their property into the
possession of a service provider to be returned to them later,
a ‘‘bailment’’ relationship is created, meaning that the service
provider has a legal duty to take reasonable steps to safeguard the
property from loss or harm, and return it that way to the
customer.

Each situation turns on its facts as to what are ‘‘reasonable’’
steps to fulfill the duty, but generally an auto repair shop (esp.
a new car dealer) clearly should keep the car locked up inside the
co. building when closed. If outside, then they should at least
keep the car in a secure, fenced area where it cannot be easily
gotten to and stolen or vandalized.

I know when I go to pick my car up at the service garage there
better be nothing missing on it that was there when I took it in!

Besides the letter of the law, for purposes of good p.r. and to
avoid unhappy campers in a situation like this, the dealer should,
as a matter of good business sense, go ahead and replace the lens,
IMHO (@ less than $50 for the pair - pretty cheap price to avoid
bad p.r. and loss of other potential $$ biz!).–

Law of Bailment in UK fits the description below nicely.
