[xj40] Cannot open boot (trunk) lid

Hi,
My friend (not a lister) has not been able to open the boot lid on
his 1990 4 litre XJ40 Sovereign for over 6 months.
It all started when his son opened the lid using the key (not using
the central locking). Since then, the key cannot be used and the
central locking does not work.
He has tried to get access to the latch and the lock using all
kinds of home made tools, but to no avail.

Can anyone help ?

Hans—

I am going by memory: Remove license plate to gain access to the screw hole
on upper right. Form a heavy piece of wire (I used welding rod about 3/16th
inch diameter) as follows: Form a 1/4" bend—then another 1/4" bend that
would be about an inch to the left center of the lock itself—your “tool”
will look like:
I…
I…
A B C

The “A” bend is what—hopefully—trips the latch arm, the “B” bend pivots
in the license plate hole. The object is to use handle “C” to move the end
“A” up to lift the latch arm.

Hopes this works for you. I had to change the dimension “A” to “B” about
three times to get this to work.

Good luck.

Has your friend looked to see if there is a trunk release button in
the glove box? My 90 XJ40 (Canadian) has one.–

Hans,

The only way I could get inside the trunk 3 years ago, was to dril
a hole behind the license plate. I used a saw to make a reasonable
hole. About 10 cm.

Good Look

Listers,

Thanks to the advice from the list, opening the boot was a 2
minutes job !

My friend was impressed with the amount and the quality of the
advices I got.

Thanks and regards,
