[xj40] car won't start

Ok this might take a long time and probably will not be an
easy answer, but its a start.

So I have a 94 xj with about 167k miles on it. Last year one
of my cousins borrowed it for a few weeks and it stopped
running. We don’t know exactly what happened. Her husband
thought it was fuel pump issue. I had the pump replaced a
year before all of this.

So now its just sitting in my driveway. What’s the best way
to figure out why the car will not start?

When I turn the key, the car will act like its about to
start but just won’t catch on. The battery if full, there is
fuel in the tank. I had someone look at the spark plugs and
he said they were firing. It there some ‘relay/switch’ that
could be not working?

If someone doesn’t have anything to do some help would be
appreciated

Ask away the questions…

Thanks.–

If you don’t hear the fuel pump running, it does not mean the pump is bad,
it could be the ignition relay that activates the pump, or the wiring to the
pump. I had the same symptoms on my XJ12 unfortunately in a parking lot 150
miles from home last year and the final diagnosis was a break in the wiring
somewhere in the harness between the ignition and the pump. A new overlay
wire solved it, easier than trying to track down the break somewhere.

Usually you can hear these XJ40 pumps run, so if you don’t start somewhere
around there.

I had a similar problem a few years ago, I traced it to the
connection in the boot just next to the pump. My remedy was to cut
the connection out and solder the wires together, been fine since.
