Most common cause is a bad microswitch in the unit.

It’s a common item, easy to replace. Sometimes can be cleaned.

Check the on-line book for specifics.

Good luck!–

I have an 85 Sov, and the trouble I had was never ending. When I bought the car the auto setting just ran the fan flat out cold. I fitted the aftermarket module and it worked for a bit and stopped. I even took the motor mechanism out and had it checked by a jag expert, and it was O.K I got hold of a second hand relay and when the auto elec got in there, he found that there was an earth lacking, and it has been working well ror 3 years. My problem may have been unusual, but worth mentioning

Wrong forum?

Well, if that is the case, don’t worry about it. Same family, who cares?

Nifty …

Yes your '85 is a series 3 XJ6. . Sometimes the forum administrators catch this and transfer your post over to the correct site.

And while you are correct that they are in the same XJ family the Xj40 is a completely different car. Thanks for posting your info it may come in handy to someone in the future.
