[xj40] Crimestopper 2 wire door actuator install

Hi Mike and everyone!

I’d like to thank Mike Stone for finding a great replacement
door actuator and sharing it with everybody. The actuator in
the right rear door stopped working a few weeks ago and it
gave me the good opportunity to try the Crimestopper unit.
So I ordered the 2 wire one but I had to make a small link
to make it work. The factory bent wire didn’t work, the
jiggle was too much and the rod couldn’t go high enough to
unlock the door. Then I attached it directly to that plastic
arm and I had the same problem. That plastic arm has some
play up and down so I pushed it up gently until it stopped
before unlocking the latch and then I pushed all the way
down the rod of the actuator and measured the length of the
link which is around 3/4 inch. I used an 1/8’’ thick
aluminium file bar that we put in the file drawers years ago
to hang files. I made it oval shape by filing the corners
and drilled 2 holes. Now the rod of the actuator with the
link goes high enough to unlock the door.
I read that someone successfully installed the 5 wire
actuator, with no modification?
So that’s my experience with the rear actuator and I wanted
to share it in case someone has to replace it and runs into
the same problem like I did. I made a 2nd link for the left
rear door and tried it out in the right door and it also
worked great. So next time I have to replace the left rear
actuator, it’ll be a faster and easier process.
Cheers!–

Thanks for the information Joe. I successfully installed the
Crimestoppers to the front doors and plan to replace the
rear doors but haven’t got around to it yet. I didn’t expect
an issue as the front ones went in easily. Now I know what
to look for.
Cheers

Hi Gary!

I’m glad that the front actuator went in easy. I saw your
pictures. Did you notice that it’s quieter than the oem?
When you’re at replacing the rear ones let us know if you
had the same problem like I did.

Thanks, Joe, for spurring me on to finish this job. The
spare actuators had been sitting there for a while. I
couldn’t replicate your problem however. The Crimestopper
actuators went in easily. I have some pictures of the old
actuator installed and the new one. The original actuator
was still working but had been problematic in the past,
perhaps due to weather conditions.

Gary,
It looks like you found the CS 2-wire actuator to be a
straight-forward replacement - good to know!
Thanks for posting the pics & happy Jagging.–

I should clarify. I used the five wire actuators for both
front and back doors. The rear doors have three wires taped
up doing nothing.–

Gary,

that’s the answer for the easy and pain free installation, 5
wire actuators all around, haha! I won’t be able to tell how
smooth the front ones go in until I order one. I’ll
resurrect this topic when I replace the front ones or the
left rear with another 2 wire unit to see if I need to use
that link I made. And I probably will make a YT video to
show it.

I continue this topic. I had to replace the passenger front (5 wire) actuator. I forgot that years ago I replaced it with a used OEM one that’s why there are two access holes drilled. This time I bought a universal actuator. Actually I bought two for about $10. The 3rd picture shows the wiring, the last picture shows the link I had to fabricate to make it work.
